Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health Post-Doctoral position with placement at the Virology Unit of the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health (BVF) at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).The Virology Unit at BVF is joined with the Virology Section of the Unit for Virology, Immunology and Parasitology (VIP) at the National Veterinary Institute (SVA). The Department of Biomedical Sciences and Veterinary Public Health (BVF) consists of the units for Immunology, Bacteriology and Food Safety, Parasitology and Virology, Pathology and, Pharmacology and Toxicology. The activities of the faculty include education and research in veterinary public health and extends from practical laboratory diagnostics and combating of infectious diseases to studies of the detailed mechanisms behind diseases. The department provides a good working environment for research and development with the aim to develop advanced molecular tools to address important diagnostic problems as well as virological questions on a more fundamental level. Applications are invited for a twelve-month postdoctoral position, with the possibility for prolongation, at the Joint Research and Development Division of Virology of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and the National Veterinary Institute (SVA) in Uppsala. The project concerns the development of cutting-edge molecular diagnostic techniques for the detection and characterization of important viruses in the veterinary field. The successful candidate should have considerable practical experience in molecular biology as well as good knowledge about recent developments in molecular biology and biotechnology.Detection and genomic characterization of viral species utilizing whole genome sequencing, massively multiplexed detection assays and metagenomic approaches and detection of "unknown" viruses will be part of the work.Techniques that will be used include multiplex PCR, whole viral genome sequencing, proximity ligation, Luminex suspension microarrays and conventional planar microarrays. The applicant has a PhD in virology, molecular biology or biotechnology.Published records of past participation in the advanced design of real-time PCR experiments and/or of microarray-based assays are required. The applicant should be able to address theoretical design and challenges in practical application in an innovative way and have the ability to independently manage a research project including supervision of younger scientists.Collaborations with other project members as well as national and international scientists make good interpersonal skills and a good command of the English language essential. SLU is an equal opportunity employer. The application, should include a cover letter, CV and publication record. It must be written in English and marked with reference number 427/08.It must be submitted to the Registrar of SLU, P.O.
