Post-doctoral position in the theory of quantum skyrmionics

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the research and the project
Recently, an umbrella notion of quantum materials has emerged. It encompasses condensed matter systems with emergent electronic properties, either because of strong correlations or topological order. The emergence may be inherent to the material itself, for instance high-temperature superconductors, or engineered through nano technology into heterostructures between different materials. Our own expertise lies in self-consistent studies of unconventional superconductors applied to describing their thermodynamic ground state, transport properties such as charge and heat conductivities, describing tunnelling probes, vortex states and mesoscopic devices. We are curiosity driven and we connect our efforts to ongoing relevant experimental and theoretical activities at Chalmers and elsewhere.

Within this project we will develop theoretical methods and numerical algorithms to study complex order and transport in quantum matter and low-dimensional strongly correlated electron systems. The focus for this postdoc position is to work in close collaboration with the experimental groups of Yasmine Sassa, Attila Geresdi and Saroj Dash at Chalmers and to provide theoretical support and modelling of quantum skyrmions. Together we propose to investigate magnetic materials exhibiting skyrmion ordering. We will focus on two key breakthroughs:
• Strong coupling between a planar skyrmion lattice and a superconducting resonator.
• Individual coherent control and readout of a single skyrmion.

Two postdoc positions on the experimental aspects of this project are also open for applications (see here and here).

Information about the department
At the division Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory (AQP lab) at the department of microtechnology and nanoscience (MC2), we work on theoretical aspects of future high-performance nano-electronic systems. Our research covers a broad spectrum of problems, everything from the fundamental problems to the very applied ones.
We work in close collaboration with experimental groups, both at MC2 and at other universities. Our major research interests cover quantum information processing with superconducting electronics, mesoscopic superconductivity and transport in nanostructures, and graphene and other 2D materials.

The MC2 Department houses a state-of-the-art Nanofabrication Laboratory cleanroom facility. The QDP/QT Labs has the most modern equipment for experiments at low temperatures (millikelvins) and with microwaves.

Major responsibilities
This postdoc position is aimed at theoretical modeling of quantum materials and devices. The work will be performed mainly in a theory team and in close collaboration with experimental work at Chalmers.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must hold a PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Theoretical Physics or equivalent, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers).

Desired qualifications:
* Documented supervision skills are a merit.
* Experience of developing new solution strategies in the description of quantum materials and quantum devices.

Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
