Your team
FlexPES is an undulator-based soft x-ray beamline, which is operational from 2020.

It has two branches and can accommodate up to four end stations, which are used in particular for high-resolution spectroscopy (x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS)) on surfaces and in gas phase. One end station is dedicated to UHV surface science, and two more are for photoemission and electron-ion coincidence studies on gases, clusters and liquids. There is also a port for the user-defined experiments. A description of the beamline can be found at https://www.maxiv.lu.se/accelerators-beamlines/beamlines/flexpes/

Job assignments
The position is associated with the UHV surface & material science branch of the beamline, and is focused on the own research projects of the candidate in these fields. Therefore we are looking for candidates not only experienced in surface science and UHV related techniques but also with mature own ideas for research projects to be realized at FlexPES. These research projects can cover areas of molecular adsorption, on-surface reactions, growth and characterization of 2D materials, thin films, nanostructures, and similar. An ability to establish collaborative research with other groups outside MAX IV and to involve them into activities at FlexPES would be an advantage.

Once employed, the candidate will work together with the beamline team helping with the everyday operation and participating in various development projects at the Surface and Material branch. These projects can include design of new experiments/sample environments, integration of new equipment, automation of experiments, development of control systems, etc. Also, the candidate is expected to participate in giving support to the user groups, with the chance to get involved in collaborations with various users and beamline staff, and pursue his/her own research and/or development projects. The candidate will also have an opportunity to conduct his/her own research with the STM system available at MAX IV, and may participate in beamtimes at other beamlines and other synchrotron facilities.

The candidate is expected to have and demonstrate strong interest and sufficient skills in driving first of all scientific projects, from proposal writing to data analysis and preparing publications. Interest in developing new experimental setups, sample environments and detection schemes, which can advance experimental capabilities at the beamline, is also considered as a merit.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

- The candidate must hold a PhD in physics, solid state chemistry, or similar, obtained within no longer than 3 years from the application submission date.
- Documented experience in the use and maintenance of ultra-high vacuum equipment.
- Documented experience in driving research projects, data analysis and preparing scientific publications.
- Proven experience in NEXAFS and XPS with synchrotron radiation.
- Ability to work in a team, good communication skills, and a good command of English.

Below are seen as merits

- Experience in other spectroscopic techniques, advanced data analysis and/or programming skills.
- Experience in scanning tunneling microscopy.

This is a qualifying appointment with the intention of being one of the initial career steps.
