Postdoc for developing quantum processor packaging

Postdoc for developing quantum processor packaging

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to strengthen our team in the packaging investigations in a Wallenberg Foundation funded project (WALP). We offer a highly exciting and stimulating research environment with close collaboration with an industry partner and the possibility to see research immediately turn into commercial value. If successful, it will be possible to continue your work with SCALINQ or Chalmers after the finished project.

Information about the research team
The Quantum Technology lab at the Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience at Chalmers University of Technology is pioneering full stack quantum computing. In our research team, we are working on all aspects of building a complete quantum computer (QC). This includes everything from the software for programming the QC to the quantum processing unit (QPU). A vital part of the QC is the package that hosts the QPU. Several challenges need to be addressed to successfully deploy a working QC in terms of packaging. Research on this topic has recently generated the spin-off company SCALINQ from our group. SCALINQ focuses primarily on QPU packaging.

A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses the Nanofabrication Laboratory featuring a 1240 m2 cleanroom area for micro- and nanofabrication with state-of-the-art equipment. This provides a broad platform for the development and testing of new ideas.

Major responsibilities
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will conduct research and development in the industrial WALP project in close collaboration with SCALINQ and other researchers at Chalmers. We expect you to drive project work packages and report progress to the other team members. Your research and development will generate IP in the form of patentable solutions and publications. A key task is also technical validation in the form of measurements in cryostats and using microwave techniques.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for the position, you need a PhD in engineering physics or electrical engineering with focus on microwave engineering and/or quantum physics. You have a collaborative attitude and an interest in working both independently and in a team environment, sharing best practices and assuming responsibility. You pay attention to detail and enjoy solving complex problems. The position requires verbal and written communication skills in English.

The following experiences are meriting:

Microwave engineering
- High-frequency simulation for example in ANSYS or Comsol
- Measurements using e.g. VNA and signal generators
- Knowledge in ultra-high shielding of microwaves, infrared and magnetic fields
- Microwave package design, e.g. BGA, wirebonding and PCB design

Mechanical design for cryogenic and/or microwave applications
- Understanding of mechanical propertied of materials at low temperature
- Some industry standard tools such as Inventor or SolidWorks.

Low-temperature design
- Experience with low-temperature mechanical design
- Understanding of the workings of cryogenic systems

Quantum Technology
- Quantum computing and quantum information technology
- Superconductivity

Contract terms
This position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
