Postdoc for micromobility fleet management

Postdoc for micromobility fleet management

Arbetsbeskrivning

This is a Triple A position:
1. A great chance to conduct high-quality research with industry support.
2. A comprehensive and supportive training program with multiple interdisciplinary mentors.
3. A beautiful city to make a career and have a life.

Project description
The focus of the project is to develop efficient and sustainable fleet management strategies for shared electric micromobility systems (EmmS). The goal is to jointly optimize the energy consumption and the level of service of EmmS fleets, by taking into account dynamic energy grid loads, stochastic travel demands, battery energy waste in idle status, and coordination with other transportation modes. The approach is to use advanced machine learning models and state-of-the-art routing algorithms to empower the decision-making of where, when, and how to charge batteries, relocate vehicles, and swap batteries. The results are of great potential to resolve the current chaos in cities that are inundated by e-bikes/e-scooters, and realize a highly accessible, energy-efficient, and complementary operation of EmmS. The project is funded by the Swedish Energy Agency

Chalmers University of Technology is located in Gothenburg on the scenic west coast of Sweden. It is among the top research schools in Europe. The research environment is international and English is the working language.

Information about the division and the department
The postdoc will be in Urban Mobility Systems research group, a research group within Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering in Chalmers University of Technology. With the disruptive development of emerging technologies, such as electric vehicles, connected automated vehicles, and Mobility-as-a-Services, unprecedented changes have been witnessed in nearly every aspect of the urban transport system and more are foreseeable. In the past few years, the group has been actively working on those topics, and the collective effort has resulted in a number of high-quality research papers, over 50 million SEK research grants, and newly developed international collaborations. The Postdoc position on offer will join the team to advance sustainable mobility systems, with supports from senior researchers.

Major responsibilities,
The successful candidate will be seated at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering and strongly cooperate with the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The appointment offers great opportunities to qualify for further research positions within academia (Electrical Engineering, Mathematical Sciences) or industry as we have numerous ongoing collaborations with the leading groups internationally.

Your major responsibility as a postdoc researcher is to pursue your research development under the strategic themes of the research group. The major responsibilities include:
- Pursue research in line with research project, publish and present scientific articles and take part in discussions.
- You will develop scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research, both orally and in writing such as
scientific articles and reports.
- Actively collecting researchers and practitioners within academia and with society at large.
- Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large.
- The position will slightly include contributing with teaching and supervision.

Qualifications
For this position, qualified candidates must have a PhD level degree in one of the following relevant fields: Transportation engineering; Operations research; Mathematics; Computer science; or other subjects that fit the requirements of the position.

Skills in optimization and machine learning are essential, Interest or experience with approximate reinforcement learning, graph theory, as well as previous experiences in research, publications, and teaching are advantageous.

Your degree must be no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers). You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
