The Department of Cultural Sciences carries out research in five main subjects: Digital Humanities, Library and Information Studies, Archaeology, History, Religion. The Department is running various national and European projects that focus on both fundamental and applied research. It constitutes the core of the Linnaeus University iSchool, the iInstitute that reports to interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration to address complex societal challenges via its educational offerings and research across Linnaeus University. Together with relevant units at other faculties, the iInstitute has a central role in Linnaeus University´s Knowledge Environment (KM) “Digital Transformations”.
Field of subject for the position: Digital Humanities with a focus on applied Computer and Information Science with specialization in Text Analytics, Machine Learning and Linked Open Data
Placement: Department of Cultural Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Extent: 75%, one year employment
Start: Immediately or after mutual agreement.
Duties:
The duties connected to this position consist mainly of the following:
• To conduct research within the fields of applied Data Science for Digital Humanities.
• To regularly present intermediate/final research results at international conferences and workshops and publish them in conference proceedings and journals.
• To closely collaborate with the other members in our interdisciplinary research environment as well as domain experts. At most 20% of the time can be dedicated to teaching and other departmental tasks.
Qualifications:
The Postdoc position requires a PhD degree in Computer and/or Information Science or an equivalent degree. The doctorate shall have been obtained no longer than three years before the expiration date of the application. Eligibility for this position also requires that the doctoral thesis has a focus on data intensive technologies, such as machine learning, text analysis, linked data and RDF.
Assessment criteria:
Excellent knowledge and documented experience within the focused research areas of data driven technologies is a must. Good programming skills in relevant languages (e.g., Python) and solid foundations in applied statistics are strong advantages. Teaching experiences in the related fields is a plus. Documented expertise and working experience within at least one of the following research and educational areas is seen of great advantage:
• Data mining, machine learning, big data analytics,
• Text analysis, topic modelling and automatic classification,
• Linked data, RDF and related Semantic Web technologies.
• Application of these technologies in different areas, such as in, e.g., digital humanities, cultural heritage data and text analysis.
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required. Knowledge of Swedish is considered as a plus. Teamwork experiences should also be documented in the application.
Applicants will be selected through a qualitative overall assessment of the competences and skills, assessed most suitable to conduct research and to contribute to a successful development of the research environment.
