Postdoc in aerosol-cloud interactions and cloud microphysics

Postdoc in aerosol-cloud interactions and cloud microphysics

Arbetsbeskrivning

This job has a multifaceted research focus with the overall emphasis on clouds, cloud microphysics and aerosol-cloud interactions making use of large-eddy simulation, and high-resolution model and satellite data. If you like to join our dynamic research groups please apply.

Project description
The research topics of the division cover a broad range of topics including modelling of clouds and aerosol-cloud interactions with different type of models and satellite retrievals of cloud, rain and precipitation. The position will have a multifaceted research focus with the overall emphasis on clouds, cloud microphysics and aerosol-cloud interactions. The project will make use of the large-eddy simulation (LES) model MIMICA, and high-resolution model and satellite data.

Information about the division and the department
The Department of Space, Earth and Environment contains five divisions, with research and education spanning from global challenges related to sustainability and energy supply to astronomy and space sciences. We are seeking an enthusiastic scholar to join a dynamic research group within the department.

Major responsibilities
The position includes three projects that span over the time of the position:
• Modelling of persistance mixed-phase clouds in Southern Sweden based on a field campaign that takes place in early 2024. Within this project some model development (aerosol chemistry and aerosole modules) could be included depending on the skills and interest of the candidate.
• Participating at the COMBLE LES model intercomparison with the model MIMICA.
• Analysing the variability (spatial and temporal scale) of cloud characteristics (ice water content etc.) in highly resolved convection permitting global climate model data compared with satellite products developed at Chalmers.

The focus within the three projects is partially up to the candidate, as well as other fitting projects in the context of clouds, cloud microphysics and aerosol-cloud interactions.

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes the possibility to co-supervise master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent and teaching in alignment with the candidate.

The successful applicant will be expected to lead the work in close collaboration with the other members of the group and partner institutes.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position you need a doctoral degree in atmospheric sciences, chemistry, physics, geosciences and similar. You are expected to demonstrate good potential within research. Experience with programming, modelling and big data analysis is expected, experience with the LES model MIMICA is beneficial. Good verbal and written communication skills are required. Swedish is not required but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
