Postdoc in AI-enabled microscopy for energy storage materials

Postdoc in AI-enabled microscopy for energy storage materials

Arbetsbeskrivning

Here you will have the opportunity to work in a truly interdisciplinary team. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Information about the department
The main competencies at the Department of Industrial and Materials Science are found in the areas of: Human-Technology Interaction | Form and Function | Modeling and Simulation | Product Development | Material | Production and in the interaction between these areas. The research develops the industrial process, from need to finished product while creating added value. To combine skills throughout the whole chain distinguishes the department both nationally and internationally. Here we gather internationally prominent researchers, in dynamic and outstanding research environments, as well as in national and international research networks.

The division of Material and Manufacture covers the entire value chain from the design, processing to characterization of materials. The division uses a number of technologies – powder metallurgy, electroplating, additive manufacturing, and material cutting – as well as a range of advanced characterization techniques. The work is multidisciplinary by nature and addresses topics that directly affect sustainability.

Major responsibilities
In order to make full use of recent advances in microscopy, you will apply artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate and enhance microscopy analysis for energy storage materials. Three novel battery concepts, specifically multivalence active material, novel high entropy oxide electrodes, and structural battery composites, in which Chalmers holds leading positions, will be used to showcase the developed methodologies. You will leverage the extracted critical information to gain a deep understanding of the complex heterogeneous structure and dynamic processes.

The main activities include:
1) to acquire data on materials used for the three battery systems by using microscopy; to train the AI models for microstructure analysis based on these data; to gain a quantitative understanding of the heterogeneous structure;
2) to develop an AI-based method to enhance image quality for in situ scanning electron microscopy experiments on structural batteries; to gain a fundamental understanding of the dynamic processes in structural battery composites;
3) to supervise master’s thesis projects;
4) to analyse data and write articles.

The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; Materials Science, Engineering Physics or another related discipline and a strong background in microscopy techniques and programming. Working knowledge on battery materials and AI programming tools are meritorious. You should have a personal ability to work independently and in a team with diverse backgrounds.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement, but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
