Information about the research
The King group is recruiting a researcher to help develop AI/machine learning methods for ‘Genesis’, a Robot Scientist designed to transform the practice of yeast (S. cerevisiae) systems biology. The position offers a unique opportunity for a computational scientist with machine learning background to work at the interface between computer science and biology driven by large scale data.
A Robot Scientist is an autonomous laboratory automation system that applies artificial intelligence to automate the discovery of scientific knowledge through cycles of experimentation. AI/machine learning methods are used to form novel hypotheses, to select efficient (time/money) experiments, to control laboratory automation, and to decide on results.
When complete Genesis will have 10,000 micro-chemostats where AI designed experiments will be executed. This will enable 10,000 parallel cycles of hypothesis-led experiments to be executed. No previous attempts has been made to automate so much science.
About the Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology
The Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology at the Chalmers University of Technology is one of the world leading research environments in systems and synthetic biology. Our research interests involve a wide range of activities from understanding the fundamental operational principles of metabolism and studies of metabolic diseases, to highly applied research directed towards development of new cell factories, e.g. used as next generation drug discovery and production platforms.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. Developing, running, and maintaining AI/machine learning software for Robot Scientist Genesis. You will collabroate with ther team members - sharing and integration of data.
The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; AI/machine learning/computational statistics. The degree should generally not be older than three years. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
