Postdoc in big data and transport modeling: smart freight

Postdoc in big data and transport modeling: smart freight

Arbetsbeskrivning

Freight transport has entered a period of transformation, where the environmental impact of logistics is a central theme. This EU Horizon 2020 project aims to facilitate the electrification of freight transport by building a toolbox of innovative data analysis and modeling tools. The candidate will get to work with a group of international researchers in a renowned research institution in collaboration with industry partners and policymakers to deliver real-world solutions.

Information about the division
The division of Physical Resource Theory carries out research and education on potential solutions to our major environmental challenges, e.g. global warming and sustainable use of land and other resources. At our division we focus on research in the field of technical and socio-economic systems addressing the challenges involved in the transition into a sustainable and low carbon society for a growing population, where a range of different quantitative and qualitative methods can be applied on our research topics. The ambition is to build challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional boundaries and increase the level of multi-disciplinarity in research. The division has around 40 staff members, faculty and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers, natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.

Major responsibilities
The post-doc will be working within the H2020 project STORM. In response to the rapid transformations occurring in freight transport and logistics, the STORM project aims to study transformation and structural changes in freight and logistics business structures from different perspectives, focusing on the future challenges and needs of the sector by developing new methods and tools to support digitalization, sustainability transition, and future policy needs. The candidate will be working with project partners creating a toolbox bringing together tools and methods centering on Big Data, data fusion, and agent-based modeling applied to electrified freight transport concepts and new collaborative, digitized logistics systems. The candidate's main responsibility will include, but not limited to:

- Assess existing and evaluate new sources of data and how to collect, store, process, and analyse them.
- Create “synthesized data” that have broader uses and applications. Define tools and procedures needed for a data management and analysis strategy that generates new information without compromising customer privacy or industry commercial-in-confidence data including data sensitive for competition.
- Elaborate new advanced analysis frameworks, models and tools to address the new needs for the analysis of structural change in logistics and freight transport.
- Monitor, assess and demonstrate the application of the data strategy and analysis frameworks, models and tools in illustrative case studies.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field, including (but not restricted to) engineering, data science, computer science, physics, mathematics, or complex systems. The degree should generally not be older than three years. A PhD in a research field closely related to the project description, particularly with research experience in transport research, spatial analysis, computational modeling, is highly meritorious. Documented scientific skills, including demonstrated ability in independent research, publishing in top journals and presenting in international conferences are required.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
