Arbetsbeskrivning
Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.
The research area and duties
The project is part of a five-year EU-Horizon2020 project, Bio4Comp, involving Linnaeus University, Lund University (H Linke), Technical University of Dresden (S Diez), Fraunhofer Institute (Munich), Molecular Sense Ltd (D Nicolau; Oxford), Bar-Ilan University (H Kugler; Ramat Gan). The overall aim is upscaling of a recently published (PNAS, 113:2591-6, 2016) proof of principle device for parallel computation to overcome shortcomings of conventional serial computers in solving combinatorial problems. In the device, myosin propelled actin filaments or kinesin propelled microtubules, solve problems by traversing nanofabricated mazes of different geometry. The focus of the current subproject is modulation of actin filament dynamics with respect to polymerization-depolymerization kinetics and flexural rigidity, e.g. using actin binding proteins and genetic or chemical engineering. Related tasks will be methods for identity labelling of individual actin filaments. The postdoc will work in Kalmar but with extensive interactions with project partners and sub-contracting labs (B Bugyi, Pecs, Hungary and Z Bryant, Stanford, CA). In Kalmar, the work will be performed in collaboration with a PhD student (under recruitment) who will focus on the application of the actin-myosin system, e.g. using the modified and labeled actin filaments, in nanofabricated in vitro motility assays. The Kalmar lab is in a phase of expansion with one further postdoc under recruitment for studies of myosin in health and disease (cardiomyopathies).
Qualification requirements
We look for exceptional candidates with a PhD degree in a subject area of relevance for the project (biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, biomedicine or similar) and who is prepared for innovative developments of current lines of research
Other assessment grounds
Experience of experimental research work with focus on actin and/or actin binding proteins is a merit. In addition, the Post Doc should have a high proficiency in written and spoken English, be able to solve difficult problems, and have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.
Terms of employment
Full-time, fixed term (2 years), starting as soon as possible.
