Postdoc in carbon sequestration potential

Arbetsbeskrivning

Department of Wildlife, Fish, and Environmental Studies
A position as a postdoc researcher is available at the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Umeå, Sweden. The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) is one of the highly-ranked universities world-wide in particular in the fields of forestry and soil science. At the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies we offer a creative and stimulating working environment and we conduct internationally recognized research in a variety of fields pertaining to forests and forestry.

The position is funded within the “Trees for the Future” (T4F) T4F Trees for the Future | Externwebben (slu.se) that is a national program that has been building competence around sustainable forest management since 2009. The program connects researchers from different fields to help solve real problems for a sustainable future.

Duties:
In Sweden a large majority of reforestation after harvest is done with seed lots genetically enhanced for increased production, but we currently do not know how this relate soil processes and carbon sequestration below ground. A successful candidate are expected to help answer this question by assessing how climatic variation may interact with genetics to influence carbon sequestration in soils. The work will be conducted within a 33 year old plot-level common garden experiment where genetic material are replicated across 6 sites along an elevation gradient ranging 275 – 685 MASL. The holder of the position will be conducting fieldwork to set up carbon budgets, and study soil processes across this gradient, analyse results and produce manuscript(s) for peer review publication.

Qualifications:
We are looking for a highly motivated candidate, who has shown good abilities for independent scientific work. The applicant should hold a PhD degree in biology and have knowledge and previous experience of scientific work with soil processes and carbon accounting in forest ecosystems. Experience in molecular community analysis, or other type of community analysis, is a merit and possession of a driver’s licence is a must.

The working language is English and excellent written and spoken communication in English is a requirement. A postdoctoral position is a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, intended primarily for those who have obtained a doctorate degree within the past three years.
