Postdoc in CFD-based marine propulsor optimisation

Postdoc in CFD-based marine propulsor optimisation

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are looking for a postdoc to work within the recently started Horizon Europe project ReShip that takes on challenges connected to sustainable shipping.

Information about the research project and the division
In striving towards zero emission shipping, several paths are currently explored. Two common parts in these concepts relate to a superior hydrodynamic design and an alternative power source or fuel for the propulsion system. The recently started Horizon Europe project ReShip takes on this challenge by developing hydrogen powered vessels, using an innovative hydrogen carrier with fuel cells combined with novel hydrodynamic components. The latter uses a biomimetic idea of designing propulsion components inspired by humpback whale tubercles to improve performance.

This work withing ReShip project deals with developing the hydrodynamic simulation and optimisation tools to make this concept possible. The main research question is how do we perform automated optimisation when, as in this case, analysis needs to be done for the full scale viscous flow. This question involves both aspects related to how to perform fast and reliable CFD and how we can use machine learning approaches to reduce the number of evaluations needed during optimisation.

The position is in the research group of Professor Rickard Bensow with a long tradition of developing computational methods and analysis tools for ship hydrodynamics and propulsor design. Both fundamental modelling research as well as industrial method development are performed, often in close collaboration with industry, e.g. within the Kongsberg University Technology Center in computational hydrodynamics. The group is part of the division of Marine Technology, well recognised internationally for its research in marine structures and hydrodynamics. We work primarily with computational method development and design analysis based on detailed simulations with the objective to reduce the environmental impact of ships, relating both to emissions to air and water as well as to operation and maintenance. The atmosphere in the division is friendly and encourages open discussions. You'll have several colleagues, both PhD students, post-docs, and faculty, working on different aspects of propulsion hydrodynamics and optimisation within the division as well as the other division in the department and with collaborating partners.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility will be to pursue the research and development within the project. You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas and concepts, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will be guided by senior researchers. The position may also include teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must hold a doctoral degree awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers) related to computational fluid dynamics or another relevant field. You have a solid interest in fluid dynamics, and an ability to perform simulation work.

We are looking for someone who are creative and can put new ideas into practice, both independently and together with a team. You like to work in interdisciplinary projects and you have the ability to discuss and communicate your work with people from different backgrounds. We also believe that you are a motivated person, with a strong curiosity and a genuine wish to learn more and develop your skills and knowledge further in the fields of research, research communication and project management. You also possess an ability to plan and organize the work strategically.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
The position is full-time temporary employment for two years, with an option to extend to three years if additional funding is acquired.
