Postdoc in Energy system modelling

Postdoc in Energy system modelling

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Department of Space, Earth and Environment now has an open postdoc position with the aim to develop a novel approach to global energy system analysis. You will contribute to developing a global model and to analyze how a future renewable energy system may be configured.

Project description
There are three main focus areas of the research project. The first is to further develop an open global electricity system model to become sector-integrated, thus to also include the heat- and transportation sectors. The second focus is to understand under which circumstances, if any, it is cost-effective to build an inter-continental grid, a so-called supergrid. The third is to analyze the use of vehicle batteries in a future energy system.

Main responsibilites
You will be responsible to further develop the Autopilot model, and to make analysis of relevant research questions. Around 10 % of the position includes teaching in relevant courses.

Our department and division
The Department of Space, Earth and Environment contains five divisions, with research and education spanning from global challenges related to sustainability and energy supply to astronomy and space sciences. The department is host to two major infrastructures, Onsala Space Observatory and Chalmers Power Central, and consists of about 250 employees.

The division of Physical Resource Theory carries out research and education on potential solutions to our major environmental challenges, e.g. global warming and sustainable use of land and other resources. At our division we focus on research in the field of technical and socio-economic systems addressing the challenges involved in the transition into a sustainable and low carbon society for a growing population, where a range of different quantitative and qualitative methods can be applied on our research topics. The ambition is to build challenge-driven scientific excellence by crossing traditional boundaries and increase the level of multi-disciplinarity in research. The division has around 50 staff members, faculty and PhD-students with diverse expertise, including engineers, natural and social scientists. We also offer courses in areas related to our research.

Contract terms
Part-time temporary employment, 80% of full time. The position is limited to a maximum of 1 year.

Your profile
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; the degree should generally not be older than three years. For this position we would like you to have a PhD in energy system modeling. The position also requires experience in Julia, GAMS and GIS programming. Previous teaching experience is meritorious.
