Postdoc in Environmental Chemistry Focusing on Organic Micropollutants

Arbetsbeskrivning

Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/aquatic-sciences) is working with applied environmental science, with a national responsibility for assessing the condition of Swedish surface waters with respect to water chemistry, pollution and aquatic biota. The department has some 130 employees. The research focuses on geochemical and hydrological processes, aquatic ecology and biodiversity, as well as on aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. The department is part of a Soil-Water-Environment cluster, a recently established competence center for landscape-level processes that also includes the Departments of ‘Soil and Environment’ and ‘Energy and Technology’. The breadth of expertise among the 300 members in combination with a well-equipped infrastructure creates a unique platform for high quality research as well as environmental monitoring and assessment.
The project (SAFESTORM) aims at increased understanding of the performance of current storm water treatment methods as filters for organic micropollutants with a special focus on persistent, mobile and toxic (PMT) substances and polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). This will be achieved by analysis of organic micropollutants and mixture effects in influent and effluent water and prioritization of chemical substances based on occurrence and toxicity.  Chemical pollution of the aquatic environment is of concern for aquatic organisms as well as for human health, as many water sources are used for drinking water production. While tens of thousands of chemicals are circulating in the environment, the regulatory agencies are in urgent need to identify compounds or complex mixtures, which can cause toxic effects.

Duties:
SAFESTORM applies state-of-the art mass spectrometry analysis (target, suspect and non-target screening), LC-fractionation, and effect-directed analysis (EDA) by an array of bioassays. The successful applicant will be responsible for method development and strategies in tandem and high resolution mass spectrometry (MS/MS and HRMS) screening. You will work in an international, interdisciplinary team consisting of several senior researchers and PhD students. You will also be coworker in a larger research group focusing on environmental organic chemistry (www.slu.se/en/cv/karin-wiberg).

You are expected to take a leading role in the design and implementation of the research, publish scientific articles, and supervise students at master's level.

Qualifications:
As postdoctoral appointments are career-developing positions for junior researchers, we are primarily looking for candidates with a doctoral degree that is three years old at most. Applicants should hold a PhD in environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry or equivalent. Solid expertise in gas- and liquid chromatography (GC and LC), mass spectrometry (MS) and good knowledge of transport and fate of organic micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems is required. Experience in HRMS and bioassay analysis of environmental samples are valuable merits.

Emphasis is placed on personal characteristics such as interpersonal skills, analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently. Proficiency in English (both spoken and written) is required.

The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) develops the understanding and sustainable use and management of biological natural resources. The university ranks well internationally within its subject areas. SLU is a research-intensive university that also offers unique degree programmes in for example rural development and natural resource management, environmental economics, animal science and landscape architecture.

SLU has just over 3,000 employees, 5,000 students and a turnover of SEK 3 billion. The university has invested heavily in a modern, attractive environment on its campuses in Alnarp, Umeå and Uppsala.
