The Department of Physics announces a position for a postdoctoral researcher in experimental subatomic physics at Chalmers University of Technology, participating in a new experimental effort to investigate the role of nuclear fission in nucleosynthesis.
Specifically, this effort focuses on the r-process during neutron-star mergers. Experiments will be performed at the ISOLDE Solenoid Spectrometer (ISS) at CERN.
Information about the group and the project
Experimental subatomic physics at Chalmers has a long successful scientific record, investigating light neutron-rich nuclei, as well as the evolution of nuclear structure, with experiments at international infrastructures such as GSI/FAIR and CERN-ISOLDE. We have recently been awarded a grant by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation to investigate the role of nuclear fission in neutron star mergers. The position is funded by this grant.
Major responsibilities
The work will focus on developing and performing experiments at CERN-ISOLDE with the ISS. Detector development, simulations, data analysis and interpretation are key tasks. The successful candidate will, within an international team of collaborators, make significant contributions towards performing state-of-the-art experiments, and take a key role in the planning of future experiments. Given the stage of the project, the successful applicant is expected to aid in the development of methods and software for detector read-out, signal processing and data acquisition.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; the degree should generally not be older than three years. The applicant is expected to make substantial contributions to the associated tasks. Thus, in addition to a solid background knowledge in subatomic physics, competences within signal treatment, detector principles and data analysis are needed.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses. Programming skills in C or C++, as well as experience in data analysis and experimental physics are mandatory. Moreover, experience with a solenoid spectrometer is beneficial.
Travel to international accelerator facilities, other collaborating institutes and conferences is expected. For experiments, those trips can last several weeks.
The successful candidate should have the ability and motivation to work within an international collaboration, in particular with PhD students working on the same project.
