Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the department, the division and the project
The Department of Biology and Biological Engineering is aiming at bridging cutting edge life sicence research with biochemical engineering, in order to emerge as the leading innovation center in the the region. The research has broad applications in areas of health and industrial production of e.g. fine chemicals, food and energy. An important mission is to drive the development of novel and improved tools to study effects on a cellular level through systems' biology analysis and modeling tools, metabolic engineering and bioimaging. Powerful experimental platforms are avialable such as well equipped fermenters, analytical instruments and laser based microscopy. The department offers highly qualified education for engineering students within the area of bioengineering. It is furthermore collaborating in broad, interdiciplinary national and international networks within academia and the industry.

The division of Food and Nutrition Science is one of four research divisions at the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering. Food and Nutrition Science is one of the leading units in the area in Sweden with particular strengths in nutritional and computational metabolomics, dietary biomarkers, micronutrient metal nutrition, nutritional immunology as well as marine food science and nutrition. The division has a wide range of modern analytical equipment for chromatography coupled with mass spectrometery, an in vitro human cell laboratory, and a microbiology laboratory. The division has also extensive collaborations with Chalmers Mass Spectrometry Infrastructure and The Swedish NMR center (University of Gothenburg). The division focuses on nutritional solutions for health and disease prevention by studies on the molecular, cellular, and whole-body level. It also has a strong focus on sustainable use of food raw materials and on many different quality aspects of food.

The aim of this Postdoc position is to develop and test a new concept for personalized nutrition based on the ability of individuals to produce beneifical ferementation products when consuming high-fibre foods. The efficacy of the concept on risk factors of type 2 diabetes will be tested in a long-term dietary intervention trail in prediabetics in close collaboration with Fudan University in Shanghai, China. The postdoc will set up and run the concept evaluation trail together with our research team, be responsible for laboraory analyses, including analysis of fermentation products in blood and stool samples using LC-MS/MS and particiapte in the planning and execution of the long-term trial in China. The project will reqire excellent communication and co-ordination skills along with excellent scientific skills.

Major responsibilities
- Develop a challenge test for optimal measurement of fermentation products in blood samples in humans
- Set up and conduct a small human study to evaluate the challenge test concept
- Apply in house LC-MS/MS methods for analysis of femrentation products in blood samples
- Conduct data analysis using R-envriomnet
- Present results in written and orally for the scientific and public communities

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in food and nutrition science, medicine, pharmacology or bioanlytical chemistry. The degree should generally not be older than three years. Fluent English in writing and speaking, strong analytical skills are also required. Experience from dietary intervention studies in humans and setting up bioantytical methods applied in nutrition research are merits.

Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
