The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 270 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor's, Master's and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.
Our aim is to actively increase our gender balance in both our department and division. We therefore strongly encourage female applicants for our positions. As an employee at Chalmers and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, you are given the opportunity to contribute to our active work within the field of equality and diversity. We are working broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. For more information, visit the GENIE website.
Information about the project and the division
Artificially intelligent (AI) systems are playing an ever increasing role in society. To ensure that they are beneficial, they must act not only according to the designer's intentions, but also in a way that is fair to all individuals and groups affected by their decisions. This project will design algorithms that will guide AI systems to be socially beneficial. The greatest challenge is to develop theory and algorithms with formal guarantees under different definitions of fairness and privacy.
The division works in machine learning, artificial intelligence theory and applications. The group that the PhD student will join focuses on reinforcement learning, privacy and fairness.
Major responsibilities
The postdoc will mainly work on developing their own research, but will have the chance to work with and co-supervise students with the aid of the main supervisor (Christos Dimitrakakis). In addition, there is an opportunity for teaching (up to 20%), including supervision of Master theses and the group's reinforcement learning and decision theory course.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a PhD in statistics and machine learning, computer science, economics or a related discipline. The researcher must have demonstrated excellent research in one of these fields, but in particular in algorithmic fairness, learning theory, optimisation, statistics, decision theory, differential privacy as evinced by publications in conferences such as ICML, NIPS, AISTATS, AAAI, AAMAS, FAT-ML and related journals.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
