Postdoc in Integrated Modelling of Tokamak Plasmas

Postdoc in Integrated Modelling of Tokamak Plasmas

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the research group
The Plasma Physics and Fusion Energy (PPFE) group at the Department of Space, Earth and Environment (SEE) / Astronomy and Plasma physics division (AoP) has its main activities in modelling, simulation and analysis of tokamak plasmas. A major part of the work is towards the establishment of a predictive capability of turbulent transport for fusion energy grade plasmas and model validation towards current experiments. The group has extensive collaborations with major fusion devices and are taking part in the developments for ITER and DEMO and the activities are fully integrated with the European (EUROfusion) activities. The research group also engages in the development of open data access for fusion experiments and modelling data.

Major responsibilities
You are expected to contribute to the research groups modelling activities focusing on the modelling and validation of physics predictions on current days experiments with applications to ITER scenarios. We are currently developing and deploying a range of reduced physics and AI/ML based modelling tools with varying physics fidelity within. These models are being validated towards currently operating fusion devices with the aim of providing deepened understanding and a predictive capability for operating and optimizing fusion devices.

Depending on previous experience and interests you can engage in different capacities and we are currently seeking experts in integrated modelling of plasma scenarios and/or ab-initio turbulence to support this activity, alternatively expertise on machine learning, uncertainty qualification and analytics could be contributing strongly to several research topics.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a PhD degree in a relevant field (for example plasma physics, electrical engineering, computer science, physics or similar). You need to have demonstrated experience in simulation and modelling based research and development. Programming skills (C/C++, fortran, python or other), general knowledge of numerical methods and tools and good knowledge of the English language (both oral and written) are required.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
