Arbetsbeskrivning
We are looking for a highly motivated and skilled PosDoc with cross-disciplinary knowledge to develop machine learning algorithms to derive reliable wave environments that can be used for accurately analyzing and monitoring a ship's fuel consumption and speed-power relationship when sailing at sea.
Information about the division
The Division of Marine Technology performs research and education centred primarily around the professional understanding and technical development of a ship's operational performance models. The research areas range from structural integrity assessment, fatigue and fracture, collision survivability, hull design, risk and reliability analysis, ship resistance and motions, propulsion systems, etc. Research activities are performed within both basic sciences to advance the understanding of the physics controlling the design and operation, as well as applied sciences in e.g. support a designer, advance the regulations and provide models for ship operations. Safety and energy efficiency in ships are at the core of future shipping research and education. The division is responsible for the master program in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, and is also involved in the seafarers' educational programs.
Major responsibilities
The research activities conducted within this PostDoc position will partly contribute to the development of energy efficiency ship sail planning system in the project "EcoSail: Eco-friendly and customer-driven Sail plan optimisation service". In addition, new knowledge and method development within this project will help to derive and simulate metocean environments encountered by ships for a ship's performance monitoring, post voyage energy analysis and autonomous ship navigation, leading to more energy efficiency and smart shipping systems. You are supposed to work closely with researchers at both the group of Marine Technology and the division of Radar Remote Sensing at Chalmers.
Your main duties will include:
1) Data collection from various ship onboard sensors, for example, the wave spectrum measured by onboard wave radar, obstacle collected by optical sensors, and ship response-related parameters
2) Develop machine learning or statistical learning tools to define and derive innovative wave parameters that can be acting as more accurate inputs for a ship's energy consumption modelling
3) Develop online signal processing algorithms to identify scenarios unexpected between the radar/optical sensing data and ship responses
4), Work with the project team to implement the machine learning tools/models for ship performance monitoring and voyage optimizations.
You are expected to supervise PhD and master students within your working and competence areas. At least one published paper is expected from the candidate during the first year.
At Chalmers your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Position summary
This position is full-time temporary employment limited to one year.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position as PostDoc, you must have a doctoral degree in signal processing, or applied mechanics related areas, with a very solid background (education record) in mathematics and statistics. In particular, you should have relevant knowledge about ship propulsion/engine systems and the experience in ship response and encountered sea environments. The position requires oral and written communication skills in English. Proficiency in programming is required.
You are expected to take initiatives, work independently when needed and to take responsibility for your work. Further, the project interacts closely with adjacent disciplines and industry. Thus you need to have high collaborative skills. Finally, you need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large. Experience from publishing articles in international scientific journals is also a must, as well as documented experience of presenting research results in front of a large audience.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
