Information about tthe project and the division
You are hereby invited to apply for a postdoc position working on two research projects on wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP). In both projects, different WASP concepts considered as candidates for commercial ships should be modelled and implemented in a ship energy systems model called ShipCLEAN developed on the division. The different WASP concepts should be evaluated using ShipCLEAN by prediction of the reduction in fuel consumption for different ship types, for vast number of ship operation conditions and voyages. Full-scale measurement data will be avaialble for validation of some of the WASP concepts. Hence, the successful candidate must have interest to do numercial modelling, simulations and analyses of large data-sets.

This postdoc position will be a part of the division of Marine Technology. The division carries out fundamental and applied research for enabling the development and improvement of marine technology. The division's research is divided into four main areas: marine structures, hydrodynamics, safety and reliability, and maritime operations. Through our research we make propellers last longer and be quieter, we reduce the drag and improve the seakeeping properties of hulls, we design structures that perform better in collisions and require lower maintenance, we do all this and much more. All research activities are best presented through our core competences: renewable energy, energy efficiency, structural integrity, hydrodynamics, ship design, safety and reliability, propulsion systems, wave dynamics, and numerical methods. The Division of Marine Technology currently has a staff of 34 persons whereof 7 are faculty members, 1 is assistant professor, 3 are postdocs, 13 are PhD students, 5 are industrial PhD students, and the other 5 are working as project assistants and on adjunct positions.

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. It offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, to mention a few. The department continuously strives to establish and develop collaboration between academia, industry, and society, for improved knowledge transfer in both directions. M2 is characterized by an international environment with employees and students from around the world, as well as outstanding research and world class education. M2 consists of seven divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as postdoc is to contribute and partly lead the research work in two ongoing research projects on WASP funded by EU and Chalmers Foundation. This includes developing new numerical simulation models, carry out numerical simulations, analysis of large data-sets of measurement data, project planning and writing technical reports to the project, and writing scientific journal papers and present the work on international conferences. 

The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary
The position is a full-time temporary employment with a time limited to a maximum of 2 years. You will be employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements.

Qualifications
PhD degree in Shipping and Marine Technology, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Ocean Engineering or similar. The degree should generally not be older than three years. The doctoral thesis should be within the research area ship energy systems modelling, ship performance analysis or similar. The position requires good oral and written communication skills in English.

You are expected to take initiatives, work independently when needed and to take responsibility for your work. Further, the project interacts closely with adjacent disciplines and industry. Thus you need to have high collaborative skills. Finally, you need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large.
