Arbetsbeskrivning
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is searching for a postdoctor working on Diophantine approximation and homogeneous dynamics.
Information about the project
The postdoctoral project is “Quantitative Distributional Asymptotics in Metric Diophantine Approximation” and is funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg foundation. The aim of the project is to apply techniques from geometry of numbers, dynamical systems and representation theory to establish quantitative improvements of certain (almost sure and distributional) limit theorems which involve counting objects with Diophantine constraints. Examples of such limit theorems include, but are not limited to, the central limit theorems for Diophantine approximants by Björklund and Gorodnik and the small scale distributions of diffraction measures associated with random quasicrystals.
About the department and the division
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. We conduct successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics. We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. We provide a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests.
At the division Analysis and Probability Theory we conduct research in areas such as functional and harmonic analysis, analytic number theory, ergodic theory and dynamical systems, mathematical physics and probability theory.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to conduct research in the group of Professor Michael Björklund. You are expected to independently develop new ideas in this collaboration. If the candidate is interested, at most 20% of the time can be spent on teaching and supervision.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc you must hold a doctoral degree in mathematics, awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline (according to the current agreement with the Swedish Agency for Government Employers), or other relevant field.
You should have experience in research related to quaiscrystals, homogeneous dynamics or Diophantine approximation. On the personal level you should be highly motivated and independent. Your ability to collaborate and to communicate in English will be considered in the assessment.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
