Postdoc in Monitoring and Assessment of Thermal Energy Storage technologies

Postdoc in Monitoring and Assessment of Thermal Energy Storage technologies

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering has about 290 employees encompassing a broad theoretical knowledge base, from engineering science to the social sciences to the humanities, as well as design-based, artistic research. The combination of all of these perspectives allows for great interdisciplinary advancement in the field and a broader discussion of various aspects of sustainability. Together, we provide a comprehensive environment for architecture and civil engineering, well equipped to take on the common challenges of building a sustainable future. We at the division of Building Technology are looking for a postdoc who is interested in thermal energy saving and storage. The work contributes to mitigating CO2 emissions from the built environment while promoting the principles of a circular economy within the construction sector.

Project description

Thermal Energy Storage (TES) is an essential technology for providing flexibility within energy systems management. The efficient utilization of large-scale TES demands robust monitoring schemes and equipment. By systematically gathering relevant data, the operation of TES can be strategically planned and its lifespan accurately forecasted.

This postdoctoral training is dedicated to the monitoring and assessment of existing underground TES, with applications ranging from de-icing of pavements and roads to high-temperature TES for solar energy applications. The overarching objective is to assess current monitoring schemes and techniques, with the aim of identifying areas for enhancement and proposing innovative improvements. The training involves collaboration with several on-going research projects such as IEA TS Task 39 and USES4HEAT (HORIZON-IA), providing a unique platform for robust academic training and extensive networking opportunities.

Besides the project work, the postdoctoral training includes teaching at BSc and/or MSc level, supervision of PhD students, and preparation of research proposals.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility will be to conduct research and carry out the postdoctoral project about thermal heat storage, covering various materials and components, and collaborating with national and international partners. You are expected to influence the details of the research to align with the project requirements. The position offers an opportunity to integrate experimental work with numerical modelling. Additionally, you will actively participate in teaching activities. You are expected to develop your skills by effectively communicating the project results to the public and industry, along with sharing your findings through scientific publications for the research community.

Qualifications

The successful applicant has an advanced knowledge in building physics and enjoys both experimental and modelling work. A PhD in building physics or related fields is preferred, along with substantial knowledge and experience in both experimentation and numerical calculations.

The role entails working with a degree of autonomy, though you will be an integral part of a research environment comprising fellow researchers and PhD students. The ability to independently plan and organize tasks, collaborate effectively with others, and communicate scientific findings in English are essential expectations for this position.

Proficiency in Swedish and teaching experience in building physics or related subjects are meritorious qualifications.

Contract terms
As a postdoc you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. The position is limited to 2 years.
