Information about the division and the research
At the Quantum Device Physics Laboratory (QDP) we perform research in nanoscale devices made with emerging materials that we tailor down to the atomic scale. Our research extends over a variety of topics: 2D materials and van der Waals heterostructures, topological Dirac and Weyl materials, semiconductors, oxide heterostructures, nanomagnets, and superconductors. We develop new concepts in device physics, and applications in quantum metrology, topological quantum technologies, thermoelectrics, quantum theory, radio astronomy, medical instrumentation, and spintronics.
We are now seeking to fill a post-doctoral position with focus on 2D materials to cover different angles: a) material growth, b) device fabrication, and c) electrical measurements at cryogenic temperatures. Candidates with suitable background (i.e. material growth, device fabrication, and/or quantum transport) are all welcome to apply.
Major responsibilities
As a postdoc, you will carry out experimental work in either 2D material growth, device fabrication, and/or quantum transport depending in your background and interests.
We aim at producing and studying new kinds of 2D systems created by orderly assembling atoms (i) underneath or (ii) on top of epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (SiC). For (i) we explore intercalation of atoms at the graphene-SiC interface, and for (ii) we follow the van der Waals epitaxy approach. The interaction of graphene with 2D crystals of heavy atoms is anticipated to give rise to a myriad of novel unique and exotic electronic transport properties. We will explore the effects of this interaction on electron transport in devices, searching for topological phases in graphene, non-conventional superconductivity, and the possibility to open a band-gap in graphene.
The equipment and infrastructure available for the execution of this project are: reactor for growth of epitaxial graphene on SiC, CVD growth in Aixtron BM HT Pro, PVD growth in horizontal tube furnace. Device fabrication and characterization in state-of-the-art clean room. For electrical measurements, our lab is equipped with DC/high frequency electrical characterization (magneto transport) at low-temperatures and magnetic fields up to B=14T. Material surface characterization at synchrotron facilities (MAX IV) is possible via collaboration.
Position summary
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment, with a competitive salary according to Swedish and Chalmers regulations. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
Qualifications
You are an experimentalist with a solid background in condensed matter physics, with experience in either electronic transport measurements at low temperatures, and/or device fabrication techniques in cleanroom environment, and/or in 2D material growth/characterization methods.
You must hold a PhD degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Material science, Nanotechnology, or equivalent. The degree should generally not be older than three years. An additional merit is if you have experience in designing and constructing experimental setups.
You are a hands-on person, with strong inner driving force and capabilities for independent work, excellent collaboration skills in a research team, and good oral and written communication skills (English).
In your personal letter submitted to this application, add a 1 page proposal of what kind of project you would like to execute. Include references.
