Postdoc in physical properties of 2D material suspensions

Postdoc in physical properties of 2D material suspensions

Arbetsbeskrivning

The Department of Physics at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a full-time temporary postdoctoral research associate position on theoretical and computational modeling of the physical properties of aqueous suspensions of Graphene and related materials (GRM). While the work will focus on basic fundamental research questions in this field, it is expected to have an impact also for the massive ongoing work with application development within large scale fabrication of GRM, nanoscience, microfluidics, medical applications etc. To promote your possibility to develop into an independent researcher, you will have the opportunity to take an active part in deciding on methods to be used and in formulating the specific research questions to be addressed.

Information about the project
You will be embedded in the Condensed Matter and Materials Theory division, a vibrant research group tackling questions ranging from nanomechanics to optics and quantum physics. Chalmers University of Technology is a leading research institution in nanoscience and hosts one of Europe's largest and most well-equipped clean rooms dedicated to nanofabrication, as well as state-of-the-art high-performance computing equipment. Chalmers also coordinates the European Union's graphene flagship project.

Major responsibilities
The successful candidate will conduct theoretical studies of aqueous suspensions of Graphene and related materials (GRM). From experiments it is known that such suspensions can have rich phase diagrams, however, a deeper theoretical understanding and good models are still lacking. In this project, you will be responsible for more in depth theoretical (analytical and computational) modeling to probe the physical properties of GRM suspensions and their different phases. For example, you will work with establishing continuum models of the equilibrium elastic properties of GRM in aqueous environments and investigate inter-flake effective interactions. Computer simulations will be an important part of the work, both for getting input to theories as well as for model validation.

Position summary
The postdoctoral position is a full-time temporary employment position limited to 2 years, but with a checkpoint after 1 year. We offer a competitive salary, excellent working conditions, and access to world-class facilities and infrastructure, including high performance-computing clusters. The starting date is as soon as possible, but is negotiable.

A postdoctoral position is a time-limited research position and an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. The majority of your working time should be devoted to your own research and competence development, but you may also be involved in supervision of PhD and MSc students.

Qualifications
The applicant should have, or expect to soon obtain, a PhD degree in physics, materials science, nanoscience, theoretical biophysics or a related subject area. The degree should generally not be older than three years. The previous work of the candidate should have a strong focus on theoretical work, and the applicant should possess a solid knowledge of classical statistical mechanics. Previous experience from working within the field of 2D materials and continuum modeling is preferable, as is experience with numerical simulations.

The applicant should have a good command of both spoken and written English, and will be expected to demonstrate creativity and a strong will to take initiatives. You may also be involved in supervision of PhD and MSc students.

Swedish is not a requirement.
