Postdoc in spatial transcriptomics applied to metabolic and cardiac disease

Arbetsbeskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future. The Camuñas-Soler lab is looking for a postdoc in single-cell genomics and spatial transcriptomics applied to metabolic and cardiovascular diseases to join our lab in the Institute of Biomedicine in the University of Gothenburg. For more information about the lab and team, visit https://www.gu.se/en/research/joan-camunas-soler-group

Subject area
Single-cell genomics and spatial transcriptomics in metabolic and cardiovascular disease

Subject area description
This project seeks to integrate measurements of cell physiology with spatial transcriptomics in human tissue. The postdoctoral scholar will develop methods to integrate multimodal single-cell sequencing and spatial transcriptomics of tissue slices and pair them to functional measurements of these cells. The candidate will have access to unique samples obtained from cardiac and pancreatic biopsies to study cardiovascular and metabolic disease. The ideal candidate will contribute both to the development of experimental and computational methods. Exceptionally skilled individuals in either experimental or computational tools could be a good fit and will be supported by other team members with complementary expertise.

Duties

• Development of protocols to perform high-resolution spatial transcriptomics in tissue slices from pancreatic and cardiovascular tissue.
• Perform computational integration of spatial transcriptomics measurements to other multiomics single-cell datasets.
• Perform single-cell protocols using high-throughput liquid handling instrumentation.
• Analyze the generated data, design and perform validations through tissue imaging and other functional measurements.
• Lead the project, present results in group meetings and conferences, and write research papers based on scientific discoveries.
• Help supervise and mentor junior team members.

Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.

Assessment criteria
The ideal candidates should have the following qualifications:

• PhD in natural sciences, life sciences, informatics, mathematics or other quantitative biosciences.
• Highly motivated, proactive and diligent.
• Ability to work independently and in a team.
• Familiarity with single-cell sequencing experimental methods and computational tools.
• Knowledge of Python or R as well as bash/shell scripting and workflow management tools (snakemake, nextflow).
• Experience with tissue slice technique is highly valued (cryosectioning and acute technique).
• Experience with imaging or electrophysiology tools to study tissue physiology are also valued.
• Candidates with a strong background in molecular biology and a keen interest in learning programming are welcome to apply.
• Fluency in English

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, two years with the possibility of one year's extension, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
