Information about the research/the project/the division
The Division of Systems and Synthetic Biology at the Chalmers University of Technology is one of the world leading research environments in systems and synthetic biology. Our research interests involve a wide range of activities from understanding the fundamental operational principles of metabolism and studies of metabolic diseases, to highly applied research directed towards development of new cell factories, e.g. used as next generation drug discovery and production platforms.
-The details of the departmental research activities may be found here.
Major responsibilities
The main task of the postdoc will be to apply metabolic engineering tools to engineer Yarrowia lipolytica to be used as a cell factory for production of various valuable products. This involves genetic engineering using CRISPR/Cas9 technologies, continuous development of a genetic toolbox, and strain optimization based on bioreactor cultivations.
The postdoc will carry out independent research in the context of a research group, to regularly communicate results to your colleagues, and to disseminate your main conclusions to the scientific community in the form of meetings, conferences and peer-reviewed articles. In addition, you should be proactive, capable of keeping up with the evolving technologies available and motivated to test and implement new protocols. You will also be expected to share in the responsibilities for keeping the lab and equipment in good condition.
For all postdocs at Chalmers
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).
Qualifications
You must hold a PhD degree in Biotechnology/Bioengineering, Synthetic, Systems or Molecular Biology, Microbiology or other related disciplines. The degree should generally not be older than three years.
You have a vast knowledge on molecular biology and extensive lab practice. You have a deep understanding of microbial metabolism and hands-on experience with metabolic engineering. Experience with Yarrowia lipolytica is a merit. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
