Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of wildlife, fish, and environmental sciences, Umeå Postdoc position Restoration of managed boreal forests Current forestry practises and fire protection programmes lead to forest fragmentation and a reduction of dead wood, which probably are the main reasons for species loss in boreal forest ecosystems.Recent reports convincingly argue that restoration measures are needed to fulfil Swedish environmental goals. The future forest landscapes will be dominated by managed forest stands.Larger area than today will be protected but this will probably not be enough to maintain biodiversity in the long run, especially as a large proportion of the new protected areas would have lower conservation values than today's reserves.Restoration measures are therefore needed to optimize conservation in protected areas. The aim of this project is to assess different restoration methods with respect to efficiency and cost, especially related to wood-inhabiting organisms. The work will include the evaluation of already started experiments as well as the possibility to initiate new work in the field. The position is for 12 months.SLU is an Equal Opportunity Employer.Qualifications: Applicants should have a PhD degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.Good knowledge of the subject, an interest in laboratory work and field work, and good written and oral communication skills in English are qualifying.Ability to work in a team as well as capability to take own initiatives is important.Driving license is necessary. Applications, marked with ref no 1287/08, must have arrived at the Registrar of SLU, P.O.The application should include CV, two reprints, a one page statement of research interests and the names of three referees.
