Postdoc position, accelerator studies on collective effects

Arbetsbeskrivning

Lund University was founded in 1666 and is repeatedly ranked among the world’s top 100 universities. The University has around 44 000 students and more than 8 000 staff based in Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö. We are united in our efforts to understand, explain and improve our world and the human condition.

MAX IV is a Swedish national large-scale research laboratory hosted by Lund University. It provides scientists from Sweden as well as internationally, with state-of-the-art instrumentation for research in areas such as engineering, physics, structural biology, chemistry and nanotechnology. Fully developed it will receive more than 2 000 scientists annually, conducting ground-breaking experiments in materials and life sciences using the brilliant X-ray light.

Your team
The core of the MAX IV facility are three sources of synchrotron radiation: two storage rings and a linac.

The largest of these accelerators is the 3 GeV storage ring, which is the first in the world to employ a multi-bend-achromat lattice to deliver diffraction-limited synchrotron radiation and the first of the new generation of storage rings, of which only three are currently in existence. You will work in the Accelerator Development Group, which study all the accelerators at MAX IV.

Would you like to work at the brightest light source in the world?

MAX IV is looking for an postdoc who will study collective effects in the two storage rings. The beam dynamics in the 3 GeV ring have been designed to achieve ultra-low horizontal emittance. This has consequences for the collective effects, both longitudinal and transverse. The single-bunch instabilities that have already been observed and others predicted by theory are therefore unique in their nature and so their study can be of particular interest to the accelerator-physics community. Your main goal will be to investigate these transverse and longitudinal single-bunch instabilities both in the 3 GeV ring and in the 1.5 GeV ring for comparison.

For this postdoc position, we only consider applicants with a PhD degree not older than three years. The duration of the postdoc position is two years.

Your main work tasks will therefore be

- Perform simulations of the MAX IV 3 GeV ring including both collective effects and single-particle beam dynamics
- Lead experimental studies of single-bunch instabilities
- Test and potentially develop the underlying theory
- Optionally participate in the operation of both MAX IV storage rings and other ongoing studies being carried out by the Accelerator Development group.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

- PhD in accelerator physics or a related field
- Experience with accelerator simulation codes

Below are seen as merits

- Active experience taking part in experimental studies for machine development and in the use of accelerator diagnostics
- Knowledge of the theory of single-bunch collective instabilities
- Knowledge of beam dynamics, both linear and nonlinear, in synchrotron storage rings

As a person you are eager to learn, open to new ideas and determined to get an idea of improvement to work in practice.

What we offer
When you join our MAX IV family, you step into a world of front edge science. We make the invisible visible by supporting scientist from all over the world, generating scientific results for the benefit of society. We offer you a multicultural work environment with great opportunities for personal development with respect for a healthy work-life balance.

Would you like to work in a challenging and supporting environment? Then join us and take the opportunity to make a real difference!
