Arbetsbeskrivning
Project description
The goal of this project is to investigate fundamental properties of high-pressure gas jets of hydrogen at conditions similar to those of a heavy-duty Diesel engine. The project will performed in spray chambers using laser based optical diagnostics. Also ignition and combustion will be studied. The project will be performed within the frames of the Combustion Engine Research Centre. The position is located within the division of Combustion and Propulsion Systems at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences, Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg.
Hydrogen is a promising fuel due to its carbon-free composition, high flame speed and wide flammability limits and can be produced from renewable sources (hydrolysis). Hydrogen have quite different properties compared to the liquid fuels used in today's vehicles and the fuel and combustion system would need to be designed differently to reach high efficiency. Today it only exists a limited number of spray chamber studies of hydrogen jets at engine-like conditions.
Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences
The research at the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences cover all modes of transport and contributes to safer and more energy-efficient vehicles, aircrafts, ships and rail traffic. The department has seven different divisions and about 250 employees. The research at the division of Combustion and Propulsion Systems covers a wide range of topics of both fundamental and applied character. The division has state-of-the-art facilities and the research is very often done in close cooperation with national and international industry.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.
In this project, you will perform a systematic study of hydrogen jet properties at different conditions. Besides overall jet characteristics air-fuel mixing will be an important part of the study If time allows also combustion characteristics will be studied. Various optical and laser-based diagnostic methods will be used in the project.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment until 2021-12-31 with the possibility to extend up to a total of two years of Post-doc employment if prolongation of the project is secured.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, we would like you to have a PhD degree awarded by an internationally recognized university in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant field. The degree should generally not be older than three years. Expertise in combustion engines, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics are considered essential. Extensive knowledge and experience of experimental methods is a prerequisite.
