Postdoc position in machine learning for physical layer communication

Arbetsbeskrivning

Chalmers University of Technology is launching the project Optical Interconnects for Harsh Computing Environments, a 5-year project funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research, and has a position open for recruitment of a postdocs to the project. This position at the department of Electrical Engineering is a great opportunity for you as a postdoc to apply your scientific and technical skills as part of a multidisciplinary team of leading researchers, with great importance for industry and society.

The department and the research group
At the department of Electrical Engineering we value all our co-workers and we know that a variety of personalities and experiences makes the most creative workplaces. We therefore encourage applicants with any genders, backgrounds and abilities. Our overall ambition is to contribute to a sustainable future. We aim to create a positive impact on the development of society, both environmentally, socially and economically. The department is a dynamic and international work environment with about 200 employees from more than 20 countries. We collaborate closely with both national and international universities, industry and medical researchers.

You will be part of the Communication Systems Group, which is known for its contributions to wireless and optical communication systems. The group has about 40 members from all over the world. The working language at Chalmers is English.

Major responsibilities
In this project, you will lead and perform cutting-edge research on combing machine learning and model-based methods for physical layer communication in time-varying and harsh environments. You are expected to publish high-quality high-impact papers, work with PhD students and other senior researchers in the team. In particular, you are expected to process experimental data and support experiment design, in order to validate your research. You will also gain knowledge in proposal writing and there are opportunities for teaching.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is for 2 years, with the possibility to extend, depending on your performance and the available funding. You will receive a competitive salary with social benefits and pension.

Qualifications
The required qualifications are as follows:
*A PhD (or close to completion) in electrical engineering or computer science. Your doctoral degree should generally not be older than five years.
*Strong mathematical background (calculus, statistics) and good knowledge of physical-layer communications (e.g., modulation, sampling, filtering, amplfication, IQ imbalance, equalization, detection) in either the wireless or optical field
*Publications in IEEE Transactions (or similar impact and reputation)
*Good programming skills
*Excellent English skills (written and oral). Swedish is not a requirement but if you have an interest in learning Swedish, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

It is meritorious if the following apply to you
*Experience in optical communications and photonics
*Ability to work in inter-disciplinary teams and to coordinate research activities.
*Good Python programming skills
*Experience using machine learning platforms (e.g. PyTorch, Tensorflow)
*Ability to supervise PhD students and attract funding.
