Postdoc position in Machine Learning for the Natural Sciences

Postdoc position in Machine Learning for the Natural Sciences

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the project
Machine learning provides new exciting new opportunities in the natural sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology. Its potential application areas span from designing new drugs against multi-resistant pathogens and understanding the impact of gene defects on a protein's function to speeding up computer simulations to understand fundamental scientific phenomena and design optimal algorithms for near-term quantum computers.

The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for the Natural Sciences (AIMLeNS) group (head: Simon Olsson) is an interdisciplinary group focusing on problems in the natural sciences and the development of machine learning and AI systems towards these problems. We are recruiting a postdoctoral researcher. The position is for 2 years.

We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher within one of the following research areas: (1) machine learning methods for molecular dynamics, (2) machine learning for protein design, or (3) machine learning for control of near-term intermediate scale quantum devices.

The research takes place at Chalmers University of Technology, and the position is funded by Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (described below).

Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP) is Sweden’s largest individual research program ever, a major national initiative for strategically motivated basic research, education and faculty recruitment. The program addresses research on artificial intelligence and autonomous systems acting in collaboration with humans, adapting to their environment through sensors, information and knowledge, and forming intelligent systems-of-systems.
The vision of WASP is excellent research and competence in artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and software for the benefit of Swedish industry.

The selected candidate will also have the opportunity to mentor and co-supervise junior researchers. The research entails developing and implementing scientific ideas, establishing research collaborations, communicating your results orally or in written form via scientific venues, including in journals and at conferences.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree (generally not older than three years), or equivalent degree. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English, excellent time management, and an aptitude for project leadership.

Information about the department
The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 270 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor's, Master's and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.

Our aim is to actively improve our gender balance in both our department and division. We therefore strongly encourage female applicants for our positions. As an employee at Chalmers and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, you are given the opportunity to contribute to our active work within the field of equality and diversity. We are working broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. For more information, visit our website.
