Information about the department and the division
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees, and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden. The department has three scientific divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas is cunducted. We are located in a modern building at the center of the Chalmers campus. Our department continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all our activities. We work actively to be a parent-friendly organization.
More information about us can be found on our website: http://www.chalmers.se/math/
At the division of Algebra and Geometry we conduct research in areas such as algebraic and complex geometry, various aspects of number theory, algebra and representation theory, complex analysis, and mathematical physics.
Information about the project
We are looking for a person who will work on modular forms in general and Siegel modular forms in particular together with professor Martin Raum at the division of Algebra and Geometry. The position is supported by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation through the project grant “Degenerations of motivic periods and string loop amplitudes”.
The purpose of the project is to study real-analytic Siegel modular forms, their connection to motivic periods, and their applications of Siegel modular forms in general. Potential candidates from overlapping or neighboring subjects are also highly encouraged to apply.
Real-analytic modular forms for the special linear group of size two are related to mock modular forms and as such have had significant impact on areas like geometry, combinatorics, and string theory. Partial results that connect some real-analytic Siegel modular forms to these are available. The goal of this project is to advance towards a similar theory that is more comprehensive including the investigation of connections to motivic periods.
Outstanding applications from all mathematical research areas will be considered. Precedence will however be given to those who have a research profile compatible with the project description.
Major responsibilities
You will work in the research area of real-analytic Siegel modular forms, their connection to motivic periods, and their applications of Siegel modular forms in general. You are expected to contribute by developing new ideas both independently and in collaborations. You should be highly motivated and independent. Your ability to collaborate and communicate will be taken into account in the assessment.
Teaching, possibly including supervision of students’ independent work, may be part of your duties up to an extent of 20 %. Our teaching languages are English and Swedish. As most of our teaching is in Swedish, the options will vary according to your language skills. Chalmers University of Technology offers courses in the Swedish language.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you should have completed a PhD degree in mathematics or equivalent, by the application deadline. The degree should generally not be older than three years at the time of the application deadline. Exceptions may be made for special reasons, for instance parental leave or military service. Fluency in English is required.
The assessment of your application will be based mainly on your scientific skills. You are expected to provide evidence of excellence in research. The applications will be assessed by a local recruitment committee at the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
