Postdoc position in processing of graphene-based nanocomposites

Postdoc position in processing of graphene-based nanocomposites

Arbetsbeskrivning

We offer a postdoctoral position in an EU funded project related to functionalization and characterization of graphene-based materials. The project aims to enhance water purification and is carried out in close collaboration to industrial and academic partners within the project Graphene Flagship.

Information about the project
This project, GO-FOR-WATER, is a joint European project targets for graphene-based filter in water filtration application. Graphene oxide based 3D composites will be developed for the simultaneous removal of a different class of chemicals from drinking water, to be integrated into Point-Of-Use devices (POU). The project is multidisciplinary with strong expertise on graphene materials preparation and functionalization, graphene materials multiscale characterization, processing in 3D structures and water treatment technologies. GO-FOR-WATER will also take advantage of already existing industrial collaboration with major players of the water treatment market including POU producers. Therefore, besides fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationships of graphene materials composition and structure the results of GO-FOR-WATER will contribute to the access of graphene to the water treatment market.

Information about the division
The Division of Materials and Manufacture is a part of the Department of Industrial and Materials Science. The division covers the entire value chain from materials design, processing and characterisation to machining of primarily metals. Our work is interdisciplinary by nature and is addressing topics that have a direct impact on sustainability. The division is collaborating closely with other universities and research institutes and is implementing industry-academia partnerships through collaborative projects and strategic initiatives such as the National Competence Centre for Additive Manufacturing – Metal (CAM2) and the Chalmers Centre for Metal Cutting Research (MCR).

Major responsibilities
You are expected to perform daily research activities in the lab in an independent way, possibly supervising the activities of one or more PhD students. The focus of the research it to perform chemical functionalization of graphene, and in-depth structural characterization via various advanced material characterization techniques. Examination of the mechanical properties will be undertaken after every crucial step of practical usage of the graphene composites.

You are expected to develop own scientific concepts and communicate the results of the research performed verbally and in writing, in English. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to one year.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; Chemistry, Materials science or related disciplines, awarded by an internationally recognized university. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

We are looking for a highly motivated and independent person, with strong passion and good knowledge of chemistry and materials science. You need practical abilities and inclination to work in a chemical lab, imagine and build new experimental setups, perform statistical analysis of experimental data. Experience in synthesis of graphene/polymer composites, surface characterization of the synthesized materials using Electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and other techniques are meritorious. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

We offer
Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.

Chalmers aims to actively improve our gender balance. We work broadly with equality projects, for example the GENIE Initiative on gender equality for excellence. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application procedure
