Postdoc position in Smart Transport Systems

Postdoc position in Smart Transport Systems

Arbetsbeskrivning

We offer a postdoc position where you will get the opportunity to work with leading researchers in the area of smart transport systems. This project will result in many career development opportunities and the chance to collaborate with international contributors. This position also offers an opportunity to teach and supervise early career researchers and a chance of securing and leading a research grant.

Information about the research
The greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from the transport sector take up approximately a quarter of global GHG emissions and are still rising. Shared mobility system (e.g., ride-hailing, bike/e-bike and e-scooter/e-mopeds sharing) and transportation electrification, are promising panacea to renovate fossil-powered transportation and are being embraced by the world to promote sustainable mobility. Shared micro-mobility system (SMS), as new drivers of sustainable mobility, are operating in over 100 EU cities. For urban planners and policymakers, the main attraction of shared mobility system is promoting active mobility for reducing energy consumption and GHG emissions. Urban policymaker, planner and SMS operators need accurate assessments of SMS to support cost-benefit analysis and policymaking in different urban contexts. Meanwhile, promoting usages and sustainable benefits of SMS via optimizations and policies are crucial foundations for scientific planning, operational optimizations, and countermeasures. Moreover, the current urban transport systems have not been ready for the grand change of electric and connected transit systems. Electric and connected transport systems, introduces not only opportunities but also challenges in many aspects. For instance, the electric and connected transit system asks for scientific and forward-looking planning of charging and digital facilities; the tactical planning of electric transit systems such as deployment, scheduling, and routing need to be re-optimised due to the necessity of recharging.

This position aims to advance in the following aspects:
1: Develop a methodological framework for high-resolution assessments of the societal effects of shared mobility systems leveraging big data.
2: Model and identify the determinants/operation optimization/strategies for promoting usages and societal benefits of shared mobility systems using machine learning.
3: Develop optimization methods for electric transit operations in terms of speed controls and deployment/scheduling.

Information about the research group
Urban Mobility Systems research group is a research group within the Division of Geotechnics and Geology, Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The group is focused on improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability of our future urban mobility systems, from an infrastructure centered perspective. This project will also in collaboration with mechanical engineering department, university of Gothenburg, and several research institutions in EU.

Major responsibilities
As a post-doctoral researcher, your major responsibility is to pursue research in line with the project, publish and present scientific articles and take part in discussions. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in a relevant field; Transportation Engineering, Automatic Controls, Computer Science, Environmental Engineering, Urban Planning, Mathematics/Optimization. It is great if you have experience in handling big data for investigation. It is also beneficial if you have knowledge in AI for solving transport problems and programming skills to handle analysis. You are expected to be somewhat accustomed to teaching, and to demonstrate good potential within research and education.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Application procedure
