PostDoc position in synthetic organic chemistry

PostDoc position in synthetic organic chemistry

Arbetsbeskrivning

Project description
Andréasson research group at the Division of Chemistry and Biochemistry now invites applications for a PostDoc position (2-year position) in the field of synthetic organic chemistry. The main research objectives for the PostDoc will be to synthesize novel molecular probes for fluorescence microscopy. The daily work will be performed at Chalmers University of Technology, in close collaboration with the Department of Chemistry & Molecular Biology at University of Gothenburg, conveniently located in the same building. Depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate, functional characterization/validation of the synthesized compounds using UV-vis/fluorescence spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy may be included in the work.

The division and the research group
The secret life of molecules is the main theme of our research and teaching at the Division of Chemistry and Biochemistry. We are studying how small and large molecules can be produced, their interaction with one another in material or in living cells, and how they can capture and convert energy. The projects are chosen to fulfill the requirements of the highest scientific standard, and the know-how they create on a molecular level is generally of importance for solving many advanced problems as well as for future practical applications. The span of potential applications is extremely wide: from life sciences to materials sciences.

Andréasson research group is focusing on the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of molecular photoswitches (photochromic molecules). Today, the main focus is on how to gain photonic control of energy transfer (FRET) reactions in these systems, which in turn will change the fluorescent properties. We use this scheme for many different applications, and the successful candidate will partake in a project aiming at boosting the performance in fluorescence microscopy by cleverly designed photochromic constructs.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. More specifically, the main task will be to assist in the design and to perform the synthesis of the target compounds. Depending on your previous qualifications, you may also partake in the subsequent validation using fluorescence spectroscopy and microscopy. The position could also include supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for this postdoc position, you should have a doctoral degree in organic chemistry or an equivalent education; the degree should generally not be older than three years. Previous postdoc experience is meritorious.

The following qualifications are meritorious: Experience in multistep synthesis, synthesis of bioactive molecules, synthesis of photochromic compounds, UV-vis/fluorescence spectroscopy, and fluorescence microscopy.

It is very important for the successful candidate to be able to communicate efficiently in written and spoken English. Swedish is not a requirement but Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
