Postdoc position in thin film technology

Postdoc position in thin film technology

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are offering a postdoctoral experience where you can work at the interface of chemistry, physics and materials science. The work comprises two interdisciplinary projects where we offer you to work in diverse scientific communities at Chalmers and in communities associated to the projects.

Information about the project
The researcher will work at the Division of Applied Chemistry at Chalmers University of Technology. The division is within the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and comprises 12 research groups dealing with applied pursues of both organic and inorganic materials. Our goal is to maintain the high quality of research and implement the same passion to teaching. We are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg.

We are offering a two-year postdoctoral position in research group of Bio-based materials for an ambitious researcher that is interested in working in developing film materials based on renewable polymers and particles in two projects.

The first project targets development of polymer thin films that contain wood-polymers. The work in the project comprises film preparation, characterization and demonstration in selected applications with our collaborators. The researcher will be part of Wallenberg Wood Science Center (wwsc.se) within this project.

The second project targets films from cellulose that have optical, magnetic or other functionality. The focus is on hybrid materials. The researcher will be part of Excellence Initiative Nano at Chalmers (https://www.chalmers.se/en/research/strong/nano/Pages/default.aspx)

Major responsibilities
The successful candidates will be expected to:
• Prepare films in a chemistry laboratory
• Develop ways to characterize surface properties that are decisive for the selected applications
• Publish the findings in scientific journals and communicate them to the scientific (and industrial) community
• Participate in the activities of the Division of Applied Chemistry at Chalmers, Wallenberg Wood Science Center and Excellence Initiative Nano at Chalmers.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
Doctoral degree in chemistry, physics, materials science, nanotechnology or similar. The doctoral degree should not be older than 3 years. University courses on thin film technology and optical properties of materials are qualifying merits.

The position is suitable for chemists, physicists and material scientists. Mandatory experiences and skills include experimental laboratory work and proven scientific writing skills. Experience of thin film preparation, surface characterization (AFM) and spectroscopic and scattering analytical techniques are appreciated.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate that has interest in experimental work in the laboratory. He/she should have a creative mindset, and the ability to comply to an experimental plan, execute it, report and reflect the progress in relation to the overall project..

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but if you have an interest in learning Swedish, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.

Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20200555 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:

CV: (Please name the document as: CV, Surname, Ref. number) including:
• CV, include complete list of publications
• Previous teaching and pedagogical experiences
• Two references that we can contact.

Personal letter: (Please name the document as: Personal letter, Family name, Ref. number)
1-3 pages where you:
• Introduce yourself
• Describe your previous research fields and main research results
• Describe your future goals and future research focus

Other documents:
• Attested copies of completed education, grades and other certificates.

Please use the button at the foot of the page to reach the application form. The files may be compressed (zipped).

Application deadline: 15 Janury, 2021

Information about the department:
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers and covers a large array of research from basic to applied. The fields of interest extend from DNA-research and biomaterials, solar cells and fuels, high temperature corrosion, and catalysis. The Department is heavily committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level in these areas. We have approximately 300 employees, divided into four research and one administrative division. We are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg. Our vision is “Through curiosity and knowledge towards a sustainable world”.
