Postdoc position on hydrogen-based reduction of iron oxides in fluidized bed
We are recruiting a post-doctoral fellow willing to carry out research within the field of direct reduction of iron oxide with hydrogen using fluidized bed reactors and its possibilities for application in future energy processes. The work is eminently experimental although it contains some plant analysis at process level, where the suitability of the reduction step within different processes will be studied.
You will work with researchers with a long and internationally recognized experience in the fields of metal redox, chemical looping, and fluidized bed technology, and alongside young proactive researchers committed to the development and analysis of energy-intensive industrial processes from different perspectives and at different scales. As an employee at the Division of Energy Technology you will be part of a research community with the general aim to reduce the environmental impact of energy use through this interdisciplinary position which plans for a large share of the activities at the Chemistry department.
Project description
The post-doc position has a focus on investigating key underlying mechanisms governing the redox cycles of iron powder under fluidized bed conditions and with H2 as reducing agent. In-deep understanding of the implications of using H2 as reducing agent plays a key role in the transition of the iron and steel industry towards carbon neutrality. Likewise, such seeked knowledge would enhance the development of commercial applications needed in the transformation of other sectors, e.g. large-scale thermo-chemical energy storage.
The research tasks include both planning, leading and executing experimental work and subsequent data analysis with help of modeling. The experimental resources at hand include fluidized bed reactors equipped with advanced experimental diagnostic tools for solids and gases. The research will be performed in collaboration with senior researchers and PhD students and with the feedback from industrial partners.
The project is funded by the Energy Area of Advance at Chalmers and is a collaboration between the Division of Energy Technology (where you will be employed) and the Division of Energy and Material at the Chemistry department (where you will conduct a large part of the work). These divisions have a long experience in the topics of chemical looping processes and of fluidization technology for large-scale thermo-chemical conversion. The divisions conduct research at different levels; experimental and modelling at reactor and process levels, process simulations of different energy and industrial processes and energy systems analysis of entire national and regional energy systems. The divisions have extensive cooperation with industry and governmental organizations and the results from the research are disseminated in the academic community and to different stakeholders in society. The topic of the post doc is in line with the goals and strategy of the divisions, among which is to maintain and strengthen its strong position as frontliner within research of metal redox cycles and fluidized bed technology.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as post-doc is to perform your own research in a research group and merit yourself by producing high quality research to be reported in scientific journals. Your are expected to contribute with your ideas to the development of the project. In addition, you are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research to relevant partners and stakeholders. You are also expected to take active part in building and maintaining collaborative links with relevant members of the research community, both within Chalmers and at external partners. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry.
Qualifications
The candidate must hold a PhD degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Physics, Energy Technology, or other related disciplines.
The candidate must have an outstanding academic track record and published as first author in internationally recognized peer-reviewed journals. The candidate must be highly proficient in spoken and written English, creative and able to drive and conclude projects interdependently. The candidate must have a problem-solving ability and take own initiatives and discuss/develop own ideas. Leadership, cooperation and social abilities are especially valued.
As Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer, strive for equality and appreciation of diversity are core values to be expected from Chalmers employees.
Contract terms
This postdoc position is a full-time temporary employment for two years.
