Information about the research/the project/the division
The postdoctoral researcher will join the dynamic research group of Professor Maths Karlsson at the Energy and Materials Division of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Chalmers. Our research, within the field of experimental materials science, focuses on investigations of key fundamental properties of atomic-scale structure and dynamics of energy relevant materials, such as ionic conductors and luminescent materials, with a view towards their application in present-day and future energy technologies (e.g., fuel cells, batteries, hydrogen storage, solar cells, and white light emitting diodes). The primary tools to this end involve the use and development of techniques at large-scale neutron and photon sources. Our research is further strengthened by the collaboration with national and international top scientists, that provide complementary expertise in, for example, materials synthesis and computer modelling. Major responsibilities
Inorganic phosphors play a key role in many optoelectronic devices, such as lasers and light emitting diodes. Low-dimensional metal halide perovskites have recently emerged as promising inorganic phosphors, but the efficiency of the photon down-conversion process is limited by non-radiative vibrational relaxation mechanisms, which hinder the application of these materials in real devices. The development of more efficient materials depends on a thorough understanding of the underlying mechanisms causing this unwanted behavior, but such an understanding is lacking. The aim of this postdoc project is to provide a crucial contribution to this important problem by unlocking new fundamental understanding of the coupling between vibrational and diffusional dynamics and non-radiative relaxation mechanisms, especially in regard to energy transfer and other non-radiative mechanisms, especially in low dimensions such as in quantum dots and in thin films. This will include studies of atomic-scale structure and dynamics using techniques at international large-scale neutron and photon sources, as well as our own optics laboratory at Chalmers. Of particular importance in this research project is the application, and to some extent methodological developments, of inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering techniques, and time-resolved photon spectroscopies for the determination of atom dynamics over a broad timescale and its relationship with luminescence.

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in a research group. The position also includes teaching on undergraduate and master's levels as well as supervising master's and/or PhD students to a certain extent. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you must have completed a PhD in Experimental Materials Science, Physics, or a related discipline, at the time of appointment. In practice, this means you already have a PhD or you will be finishing your PhD studies in the next 4-5 months, at the latest. Specifically, we are looking for a person with experience in photon spectroscopy (ideally time-resolved (pump and probe) techniques) of inorganic materials (ideally metal halides or similar materials), and/or in inelastic and quasielastic neutron scattering techniques applied to inorganic systems. Experience in materials synthesis of metal halides or similar materials, and/or in thin-film deposition techniques, is an asset.

To be successful, the person needs to be highly motivated, independent, and have high analytical, social, and communicational skills. Highest standards of research ethics are a must. The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Swedish is not a requirement but if you have an interest in learning Swedish, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
