Postdoc - The effect of climate change on hydropower production

Postdoc - The effect of climate change on hydropower production

Arbetsbeskrivning

We are recruiting a postdoc to join a multidisciplinary research project involving the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI), The Royal Institute for Technology (KTH), Chalmers University of Technology, Energiforsk and PROFU.

Information about the project
The project will increase the knowledge of how climate change at 1.5 and 2 degrees rise in the earth's average temperature affects the Swedish hydropower's production and regulating capacity. Furthermore, the project will analyze how changing conditions for hydropower could affect the long-term development of Sweden's electricity system and how this in turn places new demands on hydropower. The overall aim is to show how the hydropower in a changed future climate can continue to be a regulating, safe and efficient energy resource. At the same time, the project lays the foundation for being able to include climate change in future long-term forecasts. The need for this has been highlighted by the Swedish Energy Agency.

The task for the postdoc includes the collection of data from hydrological modeling carried out by SMHI and incooperating this data in models of the Swedish hydropower aviable at KTH and energy system models aviable at Chalmers. Since the hydropower model use results from the energy system model as input data, and vice versa, models are run iteratively. Results from the work include the impact of climate change on hydropower production and its subsequent consequences for the operation and planning of the Swedish electricity system. The work is also hoped to increase the understanding of how hydropower modeling in long-term energy system models can be improved.

The work is carried out in the energy systems research group at the Division of Energy Technology, Chalmers, with extensive collaboration with the Division of Electric Power and Energy Systems at KTH. The research group at Chalmers include around 15 PhD students, postdocs and senior researchers.

Major responsibilities
As a postdoc you are expected to carry out independent research guided by the project formulation. Furthermore, you are expected to report results orally and in written to the project funder, the Swedish Energy Agency. The job also includes having close collaboration with the project partners, primarily at SMHI and KTH, and to be involved in discussions and meetings of the energy systems group at Chalmers.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have a doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Operation Research or related topic; the degree should generally not be older than three years.
