Postdocs and researchers to build a quantum computer

Postdocs and researchers to build a quantum computer

Arbetsbeskrivning

Our ambitious goal at Chalmers is to build a quantum computer with 100 superconducting qubits and to apply it to real computational problems that cannot be efficiently solved on a conventional computer. Such computationally hard problems are found, e.g., in optimization, quantum chemistry, materials science, machine learning, etc. Having contributed to starting the research field of superconducting quantum circuits, we are now seeking about 12 postdocs or researchers to help scale up our efforts to build a quantum computer.

Information about WACQT and the project
This project is part of the Wallenberg Centre for Quantum Technology (WACQT), a 12-year, billion-SEK initiative started in 2018 with the purpose of advancing Swedish academia and industry to the forefront of quantum technology, and to build a Swedish quantum computer. Our team is also a prominent partner in the internationally competitive OpenSuperQ collaborative project working to build a quantum computer within the EU Flagship on Quantum Technology.

Building a quantum computer requires a multi-disciplinary effort involving experimental and theoretical physicists, electrical and microwave engineers, computer scientists, software engineers, and researchers in materials science and nanotechnology. We are developing the superconducting quantum devices, control circuits, firmware, and methods required to make the quantum computer a reality. We work in close collaboration between the experimentalists in the Quantum Technology Laboratory (QTL) and the theorists at the Applied Quantum Physics Laboratory (AQPL). The theorists help model the hardware and develop application use cases for the quantum processor. Our team currently has about 50 members (faculty, permanent research staff, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and undergraduate students) and is expanding.

Our department (MC2) is host to the state-of-the-art MC2 Nanotechnology Laboratory cleanroom, the largest such facility in Northern Europe, and our measurement lab at QTL is well equipped with cryogenic and microwave electronic equipment, including seven dilution fridges. We are in a position to build and operate large-scale quantum processors!

Major responsibilities
We are now seeking to fill several postdoctoral and researcher positions at the Quantum Technology Laboratory. In exceptional cases, the appointment may be converted to a permanent researcher position.

Quantum-Computing Experiments Team:
• 2 x NISQ Algorithms
• 1 x Optimal Control

Simulation and Process Development Team:
• 2 x Design and Fabrication
• 1 x Alternative Qubits
• 1 x Decoherence

Continuous-Variable Quantum Computing Team:
• 1 x NISQ Algorithms and Error Correction

Quantum-Computing Theory Team:
• 1 x Hardware Modelling for Discrete Variables
• 1 x Hardware Modelling for Continuous Variables

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years. In exceptional cases, the appointment may be extended or converted to a permanent researcher position.

Qualifications
To qualify for the position of postdoc, you must have a doctoral degree in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Nanotechnology, Computer Engineering or equivalent. You need to be fluent in English (spoken and written).

We value a collaborative attitude and an interest in working both independently and collaboratively in a team environment, sharing best practices and assuming responsibility. Self-motivation, attention to detail, and a problem-solving analytical ability are important personal qualities for these positions.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
