Postdoctor in Materials Science

Arbetsbeskrivning

Hereby advertises a position as

Postdoctor in Materials Science
formally based at the Thin Film Physics Division, Department of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.

The project is carried out in collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH, Düsseldorf, Germany

Duties
A Postdoctor will essentially carry out research. The present research project address the highly challenging task of developing first-principles based theory to explain the properties of magnetic materials at high temperature. Its successful implementation would allow for quantitatively accurate computational design of materials that have magnetic components, such as iron, including the elevated temperature conditions of their synthesis. The project is supported by the Swedish Research Council through the International Career Grant ”New theory for magnetic materials at high temperature”.

The candidate will carry out method development for first-principles based modeling of fundamental physics phenomena originating in magnetic, vibrational, and structural disorder in real materials. Applications of the theory will be done in computational studies of magnetic metals, alloys, and ceramics and their high-temperature properties.

The successful candidate will be employed at Linköping University with the corresponding salary and conditions, but also have a second affiliation as a guest researcher at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung GmbH, Düsseldorf, Germany, in the department of Computational materials design headed by prof. Joerg Neugebauer, where the larger part of the research will be performed. The candidate is expected to spend considerable time both in Düsseldorf, and Linköping, following the need of the project and according to agreement.

Qualifications
The position requires a doctorate in physics or materials science or an equivalent degree from a foreign university. Substantial expertise in Density Functional calculations and Spin dynamics/molecular dynamics/first-principles based modeling of magnetic materials, as well as demonstrated experience in methodological development and programming in FORTRAN and /or C++ are highly desirable. Candidates with a doctorate obtained no longer than five years before the expiration date of the application will be considered first. Scientific proficiency shall be demonstrated with own research, scientific publications and/or method development. Moreover, scientific proficiency can be proven through the ability to achieve research results in collaboration with PhD students and through the ability to inform about research.

Appointment time
The position is for two years. The appointment can be renewed if there are special reasons.

Starting date
By agreement

Salary
The University applies individual salary scales adapted to the experience of the employee and to the labour market.
