At the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology, at the Sahlgrenska Academy, we conduct research and education covering a wide range of knowledge areas. The institute comprises five different departments: Clinical neuroscience, Health and rehabilitation, Pharmacology, Physiology as well as Psychiatry and neurochemistry.

This project will be conducted at the Department of Pharmacology, within a research team that focuses on pharmacotherapy and with great interest in methodological aspects. The overall objective of the research of this team is to contribute to rational use of medicines. Currently, the team consists of one research leader, two postdocs, and two PhD students, all of whom also employed in health care.

Subject area description
The overall objective of the present project, at issue for the present postdoc position, is drug treatment in older people, according to indicators of prescribing quality and in relation to quality of treatment from a medical perspective. Specifically, we now plan for data extraction from registers for a clinical cohort, for instance the Swedish Prescribed Drug Register, the Patient Register, a regional administrative database (Vega), the Total Population Register, and the Longitudinal integrated database for health insurance and labour market studies (LISA). Thereafter, we primarily plan validation studies from various perspectives. We will, for instance, use multivariate models as well as machine learning.

Job assignments
An important part of the position will be to manage and analyse register data, as well as to author scientific publications. Furthermore, the candidate will supervise master students and doctoral students working with related projects.

Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.  

To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made. 

In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.  

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher for this position, the applicant should hold a PhD in medical science, pharmaceutical science, or medical statistics.

Assessment
We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in methodological aspects of pharmacotherapy and pharmacoepidemiology. A suitable candidate has a solid knowledge of register data management and analyses.  We value good communication ability, presentation skills, and scientific integrity. The candidate must be organizational, meticulous, responsible, and able to work both independently and in groups. Good knowledge of English, written and spoken, is necessary. Meritorious is experience in data extraction and linkage of register data from various register holders. Furthermore, methodological knowledge within pharmacoepidemiology and machine learning is meritorious. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Employment
The employment is limited (temporary) for 2 years, 100% of full-time, and is placed at the Institute of Neuroscience and Physiology. Starting date: as agreed.
