Postdoctoral fellow in Cancer epigenetics

Postdoctoral fellow in Cancer epigenetics

Arbetsbeskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets

The workplace is located at Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research within the University of Gothenburg, close to Sahlgrenska University Hospital. The center is part of a strategic research initiative focused on cancer within the Sahlgrenska Academy and consists of a number of research groups with research specializations from basic to clinical research projects with a translational focus. A postdoctoral position is now being announced in the research group led by Helena Carén at the Sahlgrenska Center for Cancer Research (https://www.gu.se/en/research/helena-caren).

Subject area
Cancer epigenetics

Subject area description
In the research group, we work with brain tumors from adults and children with the long-term goals of understanding why the tumors occur and finding more effective treatments with fewer side effects. We focus on cancer stem cells that we isolate from patients with brain tumors.

Duties
Within the project, you will work with both experimental models and clinical samples. The project focuses on how the genome of cancer stem cells is regulated. You will use a variety of methods (cell biology, genetic, epigenetic, molecular biological) in your research. As a postdoctoral fellow, you will also summarize results in publications and present research data at meetings and conferences.

Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.

We are looking for an ambitious and driven person with a doctorate in a relevant subject and who has a strong research background. Strong merits are documented knowledge in cell and tumor biology, with a focus on brain tumor research. Experience in large-scale genetic and epigenetic experimental methods (such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, BS-seq and methylation arrays) and single-cell analyses is desirable as is long documented experience with programming tools such as R. Good ability to work independently within agreed frameworks and an excellent ability to communicate in writing and verbally are requirements.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
