Postdoctoral fellow in Epidemiology of Antimicrobial Use in Pigs

Postdoctoral fellow in Epidemiology of Antimicrobial Use in Pigs

Arbetsbeskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

The Institute of Biomedicine is involved in both research and education. In both of these areas, we focus on fundamental knowledge of the living cell – what it consists of, how it works, how its function is directed by the genetic material, and how it interacts with various kinds of micro-organisms. Using this knowledge, we try to elucidate the causes of diseases, and find new ways to diagnose and treat them.

The Institute is composed of the following four departments:

• The Department of Infectious Diseases
• The Department of Microbiology and Immunology
• The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology
• The Department of Laboratory Medicine

At present, the institute has about 360 employees and approximately 450 million SEK in total assets

Subject area
Epidemiology of Antimicrobial Use in Pigs

Subject area description
In the Health Geography Group led by Thomas Van Boeckel, we have an interest in the spatial distribution of disease with a focus antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We conduct global, and regional analysis of the distribution of drug use, and drug-resistant pathogens. Our work aims to generate evidence to guide policies to curb AMR around the world. The new postdoc will lead these efforts for the European continent.

Duties
We are looking for quantitatively minded candidate to study antimicrobial use in pig husbandry in Europe before and after the potential adoption of alternatives to antimicrobials. The candidate will combine geospatial models with livestock demography data, and results from clinical trials on alternatives to antibiotics. The ideal candidate will also bring his/her own research questions to develop in the broad field of epidemiology of AMR. The project is funded by the AVANT consortium (https://avant-project.eu/).

The successful candidate will produce independently (i) statistical analysis of on-farm antibiotic use datasets and (ii) maps of antimicrobial consumption across Europe. She/he will be expected to attend quarterly online meeting (on-line), as well as yearly consortiums meetings in person.
