Molecular Microbiology with special emphasis on the role of chemical chaperones in yeast aging

Subject area description

This project aims to decipher how chemical chaperones impinge on protein quality control, with special emphasis on aggregation of misfolded proteins and the transport of protein aggregates to protein quality control compartments in yeast cells. Further, the project will analyze how cellular aging is affecting the pool size of potentisl chemical chaperones/osmolytes and how this, in turn, may influence the buildup of cytotoxic aggregates, including model disease proteins of human neurological disorders.

Job assignments

The postdoctoral project consists of research and supervision. The research entails in-depth analysis of chemical chaperones, protein folding and protein aggregation using molecular, genetic, and biochemical tools. Microscopy including analysis of protein aggregation and chemical chaperones/osmolytes is a prominent part of the assignment. The project will also include the construction of new yeast strains suitable for microscopic analysis of protein folding and aggregation.

Eligibility

An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment

We are looking for a scholar with well-documented merits in yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) molecular biology, including biochemistry, genetics and strain constructions. The successful applicant should have experience in microscopy and analysis chemical chaperones, protein folding and protein aggregation. Documented (peer-reviewed original papers) expertise in working with the yeast chemical chaperones and protein folding as well as protein quality control/protein aggregation is considered advantageous.
