Postdoctoral fellow in Mucosal biology

Postdoctoral fellow in Mucosal biology

Arbetsbeskrivning

The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 49 000 students and 6 400 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.

If you are interested in translational work in the area of mucosal biology and to learn new methods the Mucus and colitis group, led by Dr. Malin E. V. Johansson, at the Institute of Biomedicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg can offer an exciting experience.

The research group is part of a world leading network of researchers (Mucin Biology Groups, http://www.medkem.gu.se/mucinbiology/) working together to understand the function of mucins and mucus protecting our epithelial surfaces.

Subject area
Mucosal biology

Subject area description
The gut is in many ways central to our perception of health and involves an intricate balance with the numerous microbes living in our intestine. The intestinal surface is covered by mucus as part of its protection and defects in the mucus system are associated with inflammatory disease. Mucus is produced and secreted by goblet cells that are found throughout the intestinal epithelium. Goblet cells are a heterogeneous cell population with different functions not yet fully understood.

Single cell analysis of sorted normal murine goblet cells has reviled several different clusters. Translation to the human setting and involvement in inflammation are however still not known. The objective of the project is to investigate the function and contribution of different colonic goblet cells related to mucus defects in animal models and IBD patients.

Job assignments
The work will include several different methods as ex vivo analysis of mucus on intestinal explants in a perfusion chamber using confocal microscopy. RNA and protein expression of FACS sorted intestinal cells and different stainings of tissue are also key methods in the project. Different murine colitis models, human biopsies from healthy and inflamed patients and cultured cells will be used. The research environment among the Mucin Biology Groups provides good opportunities to collaborate with experts in a range of experimental methods. The applicant should also contribute to this environment with skills and knowledge. The candidate is expected to conduct the experimental research in an independent manner and extensively contribute to project planning and evaluation.

Eligibility
An achieved doctoral degree is compulsory for a position as postdoctor at the University of Gothenburg. The doctoral thesis shall be in a relevant area according to the specific position stated here. Since a position as postdoctor aims to give new holders of the doctorate the opportunity mainly to strengthen and develop their scholarly proficiency, we aim for those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years counting from last date of application.

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Assessment
The profile we are looking for is a committed and responsible person with an ability to work independently and to be involved in the many collaborative studies performed. Applicants will be evaluated for relevant scientific and methodological skills. The applicant must provide evidence of a PhD in a relevant research area with experience of working with animal models. Expertise in high resolution and confocal microscopy and flow cytometry are considered strong merits and experience in single cell analysis, mass spectrometry, perfusion systems, histology and bioinformatics are highly valued. Knowledge in using a variety of methods including cell culture, molecular biology, and biochemistry is advantageous. Good skills in both written and spoken English are required.

Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.

Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, two years, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
