Postdoctoral Fellow: Patient-centric home-sampling to monitor biomarker response and disease function
Gothenburg, Sweden
New technological advancements for convenient self-collection of blood samples by patients at home will transform how clinical research is conducted. Would you like to impact the future of patient centric sampling in a company that follows the science and turns ideas into life changing medicines? Then this postdoc position at AstraZeneca might be the one for you!
About the Postdoc Programme:
Bring your expertise, apply your knowledge, follow the science, and make a difference. AstraZeneca's Postdoc Programme is for self-motivated individuals looking to deliver exciting, high-impact projects in a collaborative, engaging and innovative environment. You'll work with multidisciplinary scientific teams from a diverse set of backgrounds and a world-class academic mentor specifically aligned to your project. Our postdocs are respected as specialists, encouraged to speak up, and supported to share their research at conferences, publish papers, achieve their goals and make a difference to our patients.
This is a 3-year programme, with an initial 2-year period and 1-year merit-based extension.
About the Opportunity:
Early Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) is accountable for the discovery and development (up to phase II) of new medicines within three main strategic areas - cardiovascular/heart failure, metabolism (diabetes and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)) and chronic kidney disease.
The Translational Sciences and Experimental Medicine (TS&EM) Department within Early CVRM has the remit to bridge early and late drug development by providing:
*
Biomarker strategy (target engagement & proof of mechanism biomarkers)
*
Precision medicine strategies
*
Target validation in humans
*
Human data-driven novel target identification.
The team is accountable for pre-clinical to clinical biomarker delivery including the biomarker discovery for identification of target engagement and proof-of-mechanism biomarkers, generation of target-related precision medicine hypothesis, analysis of biomarkers in clinical projects, and outsourcing biomarkers according to good clinical practice for internal decisions in clinical studies.
We are looking for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join our biomarker team in Gothenburg, Sweden. You will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to designing patient-centric clinical trials in which patients can perform clinical assessments from their homes.
Patient-centric features will increase clinical trial accessibility by decreasing the patient burden of participation. By developing assays using micro-sampled capillary blood, we strive to safely collect blood samples from characterizing drug pharmacology without the patient leaving their home. You will work with an innovative new micro-sampling device to collect capillary blood from a finger prick that can be transported to a central lab for analysis. This new device makes it possible to use a variety of significant drug biomarker assays directly on the micro-sampled blood. You will establish the processing steps necessary to handle, extract, and prepare samples for biomarker analysis. The focus will be on existing cardiovascular biomarkers (e.g., NT-proBNP, apolipoproteins) with the opportunity to target biomarker discovery methods.
Qualification, Skills & Experience:
Essential Requirements:
*
PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biology, Pharmacology, or a related field
*
Experience in liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) or developing immunoassays for quantification of proteins in complex biological matrices
Desirable Requirements:
*
Experience with clinical proteomics
*
Strong track record of high-quality publications and presentations
*
A curiosity about the drug-development process
*
Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work and communicate across different fields
*
Curious and passionate about using quantitative methods to advance medicine
Why Should You Apply?
You will lead this novel and innovative research project with support from Tasso Miliotis, Associate Principal Scientist at AstraZeneca, and academic mentorship from Fredrik Edfors (The Royal Institute of Technology Stockholm, Science for life Laboratory, Department of Protein Science, Division of Systems Biology). You will also be exposed to other functions involved in the drug development process, gaining an overview of how AstraZeneca sets strategic directions and the role that translational science & experimental medicine plays in drug development.
A place for bold disruptors shifting from academia to industry, this is where you can think differently to cut through the noise, add value, and bring fresh thinking to our teams and projects.
