Arbetsbeskrivning
Welcome to Linnaeus University! A place for knowledge, ideas and development. For growth potential and a belief in the future. In Småland and in the world.
The Department of Biology and Environmental Science is part of the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. The research activities within this multidisciplinary department include the areas of aquatic ecology, cell and organism biology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, environmental science and environmental engineering as well as zoonotic ecology.
The research project
Viruses are the dominant biological entity in aquatic environments and mainly believed to infect microorganisms. At the Aquatic Viral Ecology research group we work on increasing our understanding regarding the genetic diversity within viral populations and communities and how it is linked to biotic and abiotic factors. This project will mainly focus on the impact of different nutrient and carbon source on phage abundance and diversity. The project will use high throughput nucleic acid sequencing of viral community DNA as well as isolated phages to investigate their genetic diversity, linking them to co-variations with their hosts, and investigate the phages metabolic potential and how this affects nutrient fluxes.
Qualification requirements for the position is a PhD-degree in environmental microbiology, environmental virology, general virology or equivalent, which has been completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Applicants must not have previously been employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than a year in the same or related subject area at Linnaeus University.
Further, the applicant should have knowledge of handling large ‘omics’ data sets.
Other assessment grounds that would place the candidate at an advantage include documented evidence of research experience regarding phages and aquatic virology as well as knowledge in bioinformatic analysis of ‘omics’ sequencing data. In addition, the Postdoctoral fellow should have a high proficiency in written and spoken English, be able to solve problems, and have the ability to work independently as well as interact well in a research group.
Terms of employment
The position will be 100 % for 2 years.
The starting date is from the 1st of March 2017 or as soon as the position can be filled thereafter.
Location
