Umeå University - with its 29,000 students and over 4,000 employees - is an organisation in constant change and development.The university's researchers carry out excellence within several areas of research, and many of them are among the world's elite.We are one of Sweden's largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes.Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here.We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.Postdoctoral position in Diatoms and formation of varved lake sediments A 1-year postdoctoral position is open in the Environmental Change Assessment Group, at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science.Research in this group focuses on analyses of climate and environmental changes and their causes, with a focus on human impact.The holder of the position is expected to contribute to improved knowledge about varve formation processes in boreal lakes, and how characteristics of varves in lake sediment deposits can be used to decipher past environmental conditions.The study site is Lake Nylandssjön, northern Sweden.For the research, series of samples of plankton (160 samples), sediment trap material (280 samples) for the period 2001-2008 are available, as well as freeze cores of varved lake sediment.This material allows studies of temporal changes in diatom productivity and how this is recorded in lake sediment, and furthermore, how this is coupled, for example, to meteorological data.Candidates must have a doctoral degree in limnology, biology, paleolimnology, or any other relevant discipline, not older than three years.Knowledge and experience in diatom analysis is required.Your application, in English, must include a short summary (max 1 page) of your previous experience, a short description (max.1 page) of how you could contribute to the project success, curriculum vitae, list of publications, names and contact details of three references.Applications will be discarded or, if the applicant so wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled.Documents sent electronically should be in MS Word or PDF format.We look forward to receiving your application!
